Responsibilities

  • Absorbs primary responsibility for the plan of care for a patient or group of patients, adhering to unit standards and required nursing care for the designated patient population.
  • Effectively delegates tasks and responsibilities to other healthcare team members and takes full responsibility for follow-up and collaboration.
  • Conducts admission assessment processes in accordance with specific department standards, which include gathering patient history, physical examination, and psychosocial assessments. Utilizes this data, diagnostic information, pharmacological details, and patient/family perspectives to formulate nursing diagnoses related to focus problem areas and set care goals.
  • Maintains responsibility for creating a care plan collaboratively with the patient and family. Reviews each shift to ensure priorities are met.
  • Enacts the care plan according to current nursing standards, evidence-based practices, and hospital protocols. Integrates a multidisciplinary approach to ensure patient comfort, support human functions, and maintain a safe environment.
  • Administers medications and nursing treatments within the scope of practice. Applies the St. Luke’s Comfort/C.A.R.E. Professional Practice Model in daily nursing care.
  • Evaluates and selects teaching methods suitable for the patient’s and their families’ age-specific needs, cultural background, readiness to learn, and comprehension levels. Consults relevant hospital resources to provide specialized education.
  • Promotes patient and workplace safety by preventing errors, accidents, and infections. Reports any potential or actual concerns immediately.
  • Integrates patient/family teaching throughout the hospitalization, including the plan and goals of care, pre- and post-operative procedures, diagnostic procedures, and discharge teaching. Incorporates preventative health maintenance into the education plan.
  • Assists in the orientation of new associates by serving as a resource and mentor. Collaborates with unit leadership, if necessary. Serves as a preceptor, if applicable. Participates in educational experiences for students and RN interns. Continuously develops professional skills through networking and research. Engages in department and hospital governance activities and performance improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.
  • Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within three months from the start date.
  • Must possess and maintain current ACLS or Core certification or obtain within three months from the start date.
  • Writes, reads, comprehends, and speaks fluent English.
  • Multicultural sensitivity.
  • Basic computer skills with Microsoft Office.
  • Customer/patient-focused.
  • Critical thinking skills with independent judgment in decision-making.
