About the Role

Plans, implements, and evaluates nursing regimens for an assigned number of patients. Collaborates with physicians and other health team members in meeting the total health care needs of patients. Serves as the primary nurse in the delivery of nursing care.

Responsibilities

• Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the nursing care of assigned patients.
• Performs admission assessments documented on Nursing Care Plans and Nurses' notes; reassesses patients with changes in condition.
• Keeps supervisors and/or designees informed of changes in patient condition and/or treatments.
• Collaborates with other health team members when follow-up is necessary.
• Explains procedures to patients before they are performed.
• Administers patient care while respecting patient privacy and dignity.
• Acts rapidly and effectively during emergency situations, managing self, patients, and other employees.
• Contributes to patient care evaluation through participation in unit performance improvement activities.
• Collaborates with health team members in planning and carrying out treatment regimens.
• Interprets and implements treatment regimens as prescribed by physicians.
• Assists physicians/residents during treatments and/or diagnostic procedures.
• Makes and reports observations of patient conditions during treatments and procedures.
• Provides and maintains a safe, clean, and noise-controlled environment to reduce patient stress and anxiety.
• Maintains vigilance over patients, ensuring safety precautions and needs are followed (e.g., side rails up, call lights within reach).
• Applies scientific principles in performing established nursing procedures.
• Provides a calm, quiet, restful atmosphere and communicates with the patient's family or caretakers.
• Maintains principles of universal precautions and infection control.
• Participates in patient education, providing explanations of conditions as indicated.
• Communicates assessment data by recording, updating, and verbalizing pertinent information to health team members and appropriate agencies.
• Recognizes and utilizes health teaching opportunities and available resources/materials.
• Provides early discharge planning and appropriate referrals, including home instructions for patients and caretakers.
• Evaluates teaching effectiveness through patient/family feedback and documents it.
• Documents patient medical records with observations, actions taken, treatment, activity, condition, and responses to interventions.
• Uses documentation methods according to Nursing Department policy.
• Attends nursing and hospital committee meetings as assigned.
• Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.
• Must be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within 24 months of employment if hired after September 1, 2010, and obtain a BSN degree within five years of employment.
• Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.
