Responsibilities

• Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing day-to-day nursing activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines governing long-term care facilities.
• Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures for the nursing service department.
• Ensure reference materials (e.g., PDRs, regulations, professional standards) at nurses' stations are current and recommend additional materials to support department needs.
• Maintain and update the Nursing Service Procedures Manual to reflect current practices and ensure compliance.
• Report and make recommendations to the Director regarding nursing service operations, including revisions to policies, procedures, and job descriptions.
• Coordinate nursing services with other resident services to ensure continuity of care.
• Ensure nursing service personnel comply with their job descriptions and facility policies.
• Participate in the facility’s quality assurance program for nursing services and facility surveys by authorized government agencies.
• Review and update residents' written discharge plans as required.
• Admit, transfer, and discharge residents, and complete accident/incident reports as necessary.
• Interpret department policies to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies.
• Perform administrative duties, including completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, and charting.
• Safeguard resident and facility information by maintaining confidentiality of user IDs, passwords, and protected health information (PHI).
• Attend and participate in facility committee meetings (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Quality Assessment) and provide reports as directed.
• Ensure sufficient licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, and certified nursing assistants are available for each shift to maintain quality care.
• Develop work assignments, delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurses, and monitor staff performance.
• Oversee nurse aide trainees, ensuring they are under direct supervision of licensed nurses and enrolled in approved training programs.
• Conduct daily rounds to ensure nursing personnel adhere to acceptable standards and report findings to the Director.
• Monitor absenteeism to maintain adequate staffing levels and address problem areas with the Director.
• Review complaints and grievances from department personnel and report to the Director as needed.
• Foster a positive working environment and maintain good rapport with interdepartmental personnel.
• Conduct regular shift meetings to address and resolve issues or improve services.
• Participate in employee performance evaluations, staffing assessments, and disciplinary actions without bias.
• Inform nursing staff of new admissions, room assignments, and resident arrivals, and ensure rooms are prepared.
• Make rounds with physicians, encourage timely documentation of progress notes and orders, and report delays to the Director.
• Consult with residents, families, and physicians to plan care, treatment, and rehabilitation.
• Notify attending physicians and next of kin of changes in residents' conditions.
• Visit residents daily to observe and evaluate physical and emotional status.
• Ensure direct nursing care is provided by qualified personnel and review nurses' notes for accuracy and completeness.
• Provide direct nursing care as needed, including starting IVs, obtaining specimens, and taking vital signs.
• Authorize restraint use in accordance with facility policies and monitor medication administration and treatment schedules.
• Inspect treatment areas daily for cleanliness and safety, and ensure residents unable to call for help are checked frequently.
• Assist in arranging transportation for discharged residents and notify family members in the event of a resident’s death.
• Participate in staff development, including planning and conducting in-service training on job-related topics (e.g., OSHA, HIPAA, infection control).
• Assist in developing annual in-service training programs and clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
• Attend continuing education programs to stay current with professional changes and maintain licensure.
• Assist the Safety Officer in developing safety standards and identifying job-related tasks with potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
• Ensure personnel handling blood/body fluids receive appropriate training and have access to personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Monitor staff compliance with safety regulations, proper use and disposal of PPE, and cleanliness of work areas.
• Ensure nursing service personnel follow hand hygiene procedures and participate in fire safety and disaster preparedness drills.
• Participate in the development, implementation, and maintenance of the facility’s emergency preparedness plan.
