36 hours per week, 12-hour shifts with wage, PM/NOC, and weekend differentials ($2.00/hr and $3.00/hr respectively). Annual step increases and cost-of-living adjustments. Nurse-to-client ratios: 1:12 with two CNAs in long-term care, 1:6 with two CNAs or 1:12 with three CNAs in hospital settings. All staff trained in Vistelar de-escalation techniques and additional behavioral health trainings.

Pay

Wage range: $37.42 to $42.34 per hour.

About the Role

The purpose of this position is to evaluate and treat individuals in crisis and those with severe mental illness. Additional duties include obtaining and implementing physician work orders and notifying appropriate parties of changes in condition. This role is performed under the supervision of the Head Nurse and Director of Nursing and supervises psychiatric technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Work with physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers as part of the treatment team.
  • Utilize the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating psychiatric and medical illnesses, including substance abuse.
  • Evaluate patients for response to treatments and medications.
  • Monitor patient vital signs, observe for changes in behavioral or medical conditions, and respond appropriately.
  • Respond promptly and effectively in a therapeutic manner to resident/patient emergencies, including psychiatric emergencies, critical illness, and fire alarms.
  • Obtain and implement physician orders and complete all assigned work in a timely manner.
  • Prepare and implement patient/resident care plans and maintain complete and accurate charts for treatments, medications, etc.
  • Administer oral medications, intramuscular and intravenous injections, range of motion exercises, catheterizations, enemas, and other treatments.
  • Provide consultation and referral information to other counties, facilities, psychologists, psychiatrists, law enforcement, community treatment teams, crisis intervention teams, hospital medical staff, and prospective patients and families.
  • Screen prospective admissions and ensure compliance with procedures and completion of required forms.
  • Supervise work performance of subordinate nursing staff, review chart recordings for accuracy, prepare written evaluations, and conduct staff in-service and new staff orientations.
  • Occasionally participate in the disciplinary process of subordinate staff.
  • Communicate with patients to assure comfort, explain recovery progress, therapies, treatments, medications, and changes in medication.
  • Answer residents' requests for assistance and interact professionally with residents, visitors, families, peers, referral sources, community staff, crisis teams, and supervisors.
  • Address questions and complaints from family members and notify families regarding patient needs for personal items.
  • Participate in facility committees regarding nursing care, staff meetings, and in-services.
  • Attend continuing educational seminars, conferences, and workshops.
  • Order medications, supplies, and materials.
  • Assist residents with eating, toileting, ambulating, repositioning, and other daily living tasks.
  • Arrange transportation as needed and tidy patient rooms.
  • Assist in subduing and/or restraining agitated and/or violent patients, as needed.
  • Distribute meals and snacks, keep the work environment clean and organized, and answer telephones.
  • Staff the unit while maintaining safety and fiscal responsibility.
  • Act as administrative charge for the entire facility in the absence of the Director of Nursing, Administrator, or Client Services Manager.

Requirements

Associate degree in Nursing, one to two years of nursing experience (preferably in behavioral health), or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. Wisconsin Registered Nurse license required.
