About the role

The Rigging Superintendent & Training role is based at Bechtel Equipment Operations Inc., reports to the Rigging Supervision and Training Ops Manager, and provides Bechtel employees with crane and rigging training, testing, qualification, as well as operational and technical direction to craft and non-manual professionals engaged in crane and rigging activities at Bechtel’s south yard and other remote locations across all GBUs as required.

Responsibilities

Training

  • Conduct Bechtel crane and rigging training and qualification programs, including proctoring written and practical exams for non-manual and craft professionals on Bechtel project sites.
  • Conduct project-specific training (Bull Rigging, Crane Operations, Rigging, etc.) as requested by the Rigging Training Manager/Project Trainer Manager.
  • Evaluate craft training needs and make recommendations to the rigging and training management team for additional program development or project support.
  • Audit project training programs and compliance.
  • Provide feedback to training supervisors/coordinators.
  • Assist BEO training coordinator in the development of site-specific training needs.
  • Develop toolbox talks/safety flashes in areas that need additional focus.

Supervisory

  • Supervise and direct crane and rigging operations at the BEO equipment yard and other project locations as required.
  • Ensure all crane and rigging operations comply with applicable Bechtel procedures, OSHA standards, and federal, state, county, and local regulations, as well as customer and project-specific requirements.
  • Engage in Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and sign FLHA cards for rigging activities.
  • Manage all site cranes per process and procedure requirements regarding safe usage, site relocation, assembly/disassembly of telescopic RT-AT and lattice boom crawler cranes, safe rig-up and raising-lowering of long boom cranes, proper set-up, usage, and site ground bearing conditions for crane pads.
  • Manage site COE’s (crane operator examiners) and the crane operator qualification program, including verification of crane operator certifications, state licenses, and medical certificates.
  • Ensure assigned personnel are properly qualified, trained, competent, and aware of their responsibilities, complying with all applicable standards, requirements, and safe practices.
  • Provide support in pre-planning rigging activities to facilitate engineering, scheduling, and development of construction equipment requirements and estimates.
  • Maintain continual contact with competent person riggers, equipment managers, and crane operators regarding the execution of lifting operations.
  • Support daily planning and execution of rigging activities for safe and efficient operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) and 5-8 years of relevant experience, or 9-12 years of relevant work experience.
  • Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications.
  • Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to read and interpret crane manufacturers' operator manuals and load charts.
  • Experienced in the safe use and inspection of rigging hardware.
  • Ability to develop a 3-week look-ahead schedule regarding crane operations.
  • Monitor and track utilization of all site cranes.
  • Project experience necessary.
  • Rigging training and testing coordinator experience.
  • Good analytical and strategic planning skills: able to prioritize and balance short and long-term priorities.
  • Good understanding of the construction industry.
  • Effective people skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified rigger/signal person (NCCCO, NCCCER, or equivalent).
  • Certified crane operator (NCCCO, NCCER, or equivalent).
  • Certified Crane Operator, experienced as A/D director for all types of mobile cranes.
  • Certified OSHA crane inspector.
  • Qualified or certified construction trainer.
