RIGGER

About the role

You will serve as a RIGGER in the Lifting & Handling Department (Code 700), Rigging & Equipment Operations Division (Code 740), Rigging Branch (Code 741) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Responsibilities

You will apply a thorough knowledge of rigging principles and techniques to relative to load stress and ability to move objects.

You will utilize a working knowledge of submarines, and or surface ship systems, components, compartments and tanks.

You will ensure all bells on cranes are operational, tracks are clear and moving and the tower and bool are before rotating or tracking the crane.

You will direct the movement of portal and hammer head or mobile cranes and derricks.

You will be responsible for instructing apprentice helpers, rigger workers and or riggers in assigned work.

Requirements

• Must be a US Citizen.
• Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
• Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
• Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
• Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.
• Must be able to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• Must be able to participate in medical surveillance programs.
• Must be able to travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites.
• Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolding.
• Must be able to lift and/or carry loads/items up to 50 pounds in weight.
• Must successfully complete a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) and be subject to random testing.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

• Experience applying thorough knowledge of rigging principles and techniques to make difficult decisions relative to load stress and ability to move objects.
• Experience using complex multipoint suspension techniques to permit maneuvering over and around obstacles.
• Experience planning, laying out, assembling, repairing, and installing complex weight-handling gear and rigging systems.
• Experience reading, interpreting, and understanding specifications, procedures, diagrams, and sketches.
• Experience using working knowledge of submarines and/or surface ship systems, components, compartments, and tanks.
• Experience directing cranes and operating hoists, forklifts and/ or hand trucks to handle heavier material and equipment.

Skills

Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
