Revenue Service Specialist 1
About the role
The Iowa Department of Revenue’s Alcohol & Tax Compliance Division seeks a Revenue Service Specialist 1 to join the Alcohol Licensing team. This position involves processing documents, handling license applications, and assisting with customer inquiries related to Iowa's alcohol laws.
Responsibilities
- Receive and process documents electronically and manually for various tax returns and business permit applications.
- Prepare source data for entry into proprietary state systems by reviewing forms for accuracy and addressing deficiencies.
- Issue licenses, certificates, and permits following department procedures, ensuring compliance with Iowa Code and Rules.
- Answer help line inquiries and assist with questions regarding Iowa alcohol laws and other licensing-related matters.
- Elevate more complex inquiries to higher-level specialists or department contacts.
- Show initiative, attention to detail, and commitment by completing tasks efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Determine necessary technical or system assistance and resolve issues, escalating complex problems to senior specialists.
Requirements
- Experience responding to and resolving customer inquiries via phone, email, and in person.
- Knowledge of business, accounting, and general office practices.
- Prior experience using Microsoft Office, Google software, and Salesforce.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in any field.
- A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience, equivalent to one year of full-time work in relevant fields.
- Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch, including one year of full-time work in tax, accounting, bookkeeping, auditing, insurance, analysis of financial or business forms and data, or answering technical or tax-related questions.
Skills
- Customer Service – Ability to provide excellent customer service, assess customer needs, meet quality standards, and evaluate customer satisfaction.
- Active Listening – Give full attention to others, ask questions as needed, and avoid interrupting during conversations.
- Clerical Procedures – Proficiency in word processing, file management, form design, and other office procedures.
