About the Role
The Retail Sales Associate processes textiles and wares, maintains store and merchandise displays, and provides excellent customer service. This role involves operating the cash register, handling donations, and acting in a security/loss prevention capacity while interacting with customers, donors, clients, and employees.
Responsibilities
- Support the mission and vision of Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan.
- Perform work in a safe manner by observing all Goodwill safety policies and procedures.
- Interact professionally with team members, clients, and customers, respecting diversity in all forms.
- Perform day-to-day operational functions, including running the register, stocking shelves, assisting customers, and accepting donations.
- Be knowledgeable of Goodwill’s merchandise and pricing structures.
- Set up advertising signs and displays to attract customers and promote sales.
- Assist customers with merchandise selection and answer questions.
- Perform cashier duties, including sales transactions, payments, refunds, and end-of-day register processing.
- Account for proper register balances and prevent unauthorized removal of merchandise.
- Wrap or bag merchandise and transport purchases to customer vehicles when needed.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area, including stocking, straightening, and cleaning the sales floor.
- Remove empty hangers and outdated merchandise according to rotation schedules.
- Ensure fitting rooms are free of merchandise and re-hang clothes as necessary.
- Answer the telephone and make store announcements as needed.
- Process and price textiles and wares within established timeframes and meet production goals.
- Expedite merchandise to and from the sales floor.
- Adhere to all agency policies and procedures and promote Goodwill positively.
- Comply with Goodwill’s safety program and report unsafe practices or situations.
- Help train new staff and clients as directed by the supervisor.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements
- Retail experience is a plus.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse staff, customers, volunteers, and vendors.
- Good verbal communication and organizational skills.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and be flexible in a multi-duty environment.
- Ability to work within established guidelines.
- Forklift operation experience is preferred.
- Ability to handle cash accurately and perform basic math functions.
- Commitment to working with people who have disabilities and/or other barriers to employment.
- Positive, can-do attitude with a strong commitment to teamwork.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Reliable means of transportation.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to stand, walk, use hands, talk, and hear.
- Requires reaching with hands and arms, balancing, stooping, kneeling, twisting, turning, and crouching.
- Specific vision abilities include color vision.
- Often lifts and/or moves up to 10 pounds; regularly lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds; occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds.
- Work is repetitive and may require standing for up to 8 hours during a shift.
