About the role

The Medical Respite program provides a safe environment for individuals experiencing homelessness to recuperate from medical conditions while addressing other needs like housing and benefits. The Respite Community Assistant supports the program by providing operational support and ensuring the safety, comfort, and well-being of residents.

Responsibilities

  • Foster a community of safety, inclusion, and healing aligned with standards for medical respite care.
  • Greet and assist residents, ensuring a welcoming and safe environment.
  • Manage logistics such as bed assignments, hygiene and comfort item distribution, and coordinate meals and laundry.
  • Support residents' needs during their stay, including resolving conflicts and conducting hourly rounds.
  • Assist with discharge, ensuring all personal belongings are gathered and properly returned.
  • Collaborate with the Shelter Community Manager and other team members to ensure smooth operations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (higher degree accepted)
  • 2+ years direct service experience in emergency shelters or homeless services management
  • Previous experience working with vulnerable populations (homeless, elderly, individuals experiencing mental health or substance use issues) preferred
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association required

Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills, able to interact respectfully and professionally with residents, staff, and community partners
  • Familiarity with shelter policies, safety protocols, and compliance with regulations like HIPAA
  • Excellent customer service skills, able to build positive relationships with residents and team members
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to change, assess situations quickly, and provide solutions, especially in emergencies
  • Time management skills, able to prioritize and complete tasks efficiently

Skills

  • Effective problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Knowledge of medical respite care standards and guidelines

Benefits

Employees receive training during a 30-day period, which includes Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at various locations. Training covers crisis intervention, food handling, and basic life support certifications.

Pay

Details on pay will be provided after successful completion of the training period.

Schedule

The schedule for this position will begin after the 30-day training period.
