Respiratory Therapy Student PRN

About the Role

Under the supervision of a licensed respiratory care practitioner (RCP), the Respiratory Therapy Student Technician will administer noninvasive respiratory care/therapy to patients as ordered by the attending physician. This role performs noninvasive diagnostic procedures to evaluate the need for, and response to, therapy under the supervision of the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor or Respiratory Therapy Charge Therapist. The position participates in providing patient-specific care standards and follows service excellence standards to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction.

Responsibilities

• Administers and monitors respiratory therapy treatments according to established departmental policy.
• Responds immediately to Code Blue codes and Rapid Response calls, managing the airway and external compressions under the direct supervision of a licensed RCP.
• Follows established hospital and departmental infection control policies.
• Consults Charge Therapist when in doubt about a procedure or situation.
• Records pertinent information on patient medical records and accurately documents all respiratory care interventions.
• Maintains up-to-date departmental records and enters charges per shift for services performed.
• Provides knowledgeable and accurate shift reports to the oncoming shift.
• Performs noninvasive diagnostic tests and non-invasive respiratory therapy, such as nebulizer therapy, bedside spirometry, peak flow, inspiratory and expiratory force, and vital capacity measurements.
• Monitors pulse oximetry and performs EKGs as ordered.
• Administers and monitors continuous oxygen therapy, setting up new oxygen starts within 20 minutes of notification according to departmental policy.
• Performs cleaning, preventive maintenance, and calibration of Respiratory Therapy equipment as required.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High School Graduate / GED.
• Currently enrolled in an accredited respiratory care program.
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
