About the role

A Respiratory Therapy Extern is a full-time student in an accredited Respiratory Therapy program, preferably affiliated with HFHS, who works at the hospital in addition to their clinical studies.

Responsibilities

• Performs basic tasks learned in class and practiced in the School Laboratory setting under supervision of Registered Respiratory Therapists.
• Practices tasks demonstrated in the School Laboratory and during clinical rotations at area hospitals.
• Fulfills all HFH Departmental Policies and Procedures.
• Performs tasks only after successfully passing theoretical and practical competencies administered by HFH Departmental leadership.
• As externs progress, their job scope expands based on demonstrated skills and proficiencies.

Requirements

• Full-time student in good standing in an accredited Respiratory Therapy program, preferably affiliated with HFHS.
• Must maintain expected graduation date; failing grades or dropping out can lead to automatic termination.
• After graduation, may apply for employment as a respiratory therapist and be hired based on meeting educational and experience criteria, as well as availability of positions.
• Successfully completes academic and clinical HFH competencies for each task.
