Position Summary

Examines and treats patients with breathing-related conditions, performs diagnostic testing, and collaborates with physicians to develop and implement treatment plans. Provides patient education on therapies and medication use; performs physiotherapy and related treatments. Reports to the Director or Manager of Department.

Measures and Analyzes

  • Lung capacity
  • Analyzes blood samples using a blood gas analyzer
  • Performs bedside PFTs, EKGs, and tobacco-cessation education as ordered

Delivers and Monitors

  • Ordered respiratory therapies
  • Marks patient condition and response to treatment

Responds to Emergencies

  • Responds to codes and emergent calls
  • Affords patient condition and provides appropriate interventions

Evaluates and Improves

  • Evaluates and contributes to respiratory care policies and procedures based on outcomes, research, and best practices

Trains and Supports

  • Trains patients and families on illness, treatments, device use, and community resources
  • Maintains storage areas and equipment readiness
  • Disassembles, cleans, sterilizes, performs preventive maintenance, and calibrates respiratory equipment
  • Maintains respiratory supplies and medical gas cylinders

Education and Certifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Respiratory Therapy
  • Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) license in state of practice
  • Required Certifications: BCLS
