About the Role

The Respiratory Therapy Department follows the American Association for Respiratory Care Clinical Practice Guidelines (AARC CPG) for patient care. Respiratory Therapists operate in a physician-supervised environment, adhering to AARC CPG and established departmental standards to provide critical care services across all patient age groups.

Responsibilities

• Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers, and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards.
• Reviews medical records, including physicians' orders, for completeness, indications for therapy, and potential contraindications prior to administering therapies/medications in accordance with AARC CPG.
• Conducts clinical patient assessments, including cardiac, pulmonary, and neurologic status, following detailed criteria within individual AARC CPG for ordered therapies.
• Assembles and confirms equipment functionality per manufacturers' specifications and departmental standards before use.
• Monitors equipment during use and applies corrective actions in case of malfunction.
• Administers ordered therapy while clinically monitoring the patient for outcomes, hazards, or complications.
• Maintains, monitors, measures, and adjusts mechanical ventilators to ensure proper function and therapeutic effectiveness.
• Performs routine oxygen, aerosol, and emergent airway management, chest physiotherapy, postural drainage, and/or sputum induction to maintain patient airways (in accordance with AARC CPG).
• Performs regular assessments of patients and ventilator systems in line with AARC CPG and departmental standards.
• Documents patient assessments, therapies delivered, monitoring, responses, and complications in the medical record following AARC CPG.
• Provides emergency response for cardiopulmonary arrest, respiratory emergencies, hospital disasters, and other emergencies as needed.
• Delivers basic life support maneuvers, including airway maintenance, external cardiac compression, and manual ventilation techniques.
• Maintains annual AHA BLS certification.
• Assists in developing and implementing multidisciplinary patient care plans as part of the healthcare delivery team.
• Documents patient responses to ongoing care and participates in reevaluating care delivery.
• Plays an integral role in the pulmonary rehabilitation of difficult-to-wean patients.
• Performs routine care, cleaning, disinfecting, and maintenance of departmental equipment; documents malfunctions and alerts supervisors.
• Assists in maintaining stock levels by notifying supervisors when replenishment is needed.
• Measures pulmonary function, gas exchange, respiratory rate, tidal and minute ventilation, alveolar-to-arterial PO2 gradient, intrapulmonary shunt fraction, respiratory mechanics, pulse rate, blood pressure, arterial blood gases, end-tidal CO2, and pulse oximetry.
• Calibrates and maintains pulmonary function and other departmental equipment according to manufacturers' recommendations and departmental standards.
• With appropriate training, assists in bronchoscopies, sleep studies, bronchial provocation, and exercise testing for evaluation of hypoxemia and/or desaturation studies.
• Maintains departmental documentation, including patient charting, therapy records, quality assurance, and patient charges.
• Assists in developing, implementing, and maintaining departmental quality assurance programs and audits as assigned.
• Enhances professional growth through in-service meetings, educational programs, current literature, and workshops.
• Reports patient conditions, therapies, goals, objectives, and responses on a shift-to-shift basis.
• Reports adverse reactions to pharmaceuticals and/or therapies, and hospital variance notifications.

Requirements

• Minimum experience: Will consider applicants with less than one year of respiratory therapy experience.
• Interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to explain respiratory therapy/pulmonary function test procedures to patients.
• RRT License in respiratory therapy by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
• Certified in Basic Life Support by the AHA or Red Cross (required); Advanced Life Support Certification preferred.
• Must obtain sufficient annual Continuing Education to maintain license.

Pay

Compensation range: $33.64 - $49.98 per hour. This range is based on minimum job qualifications, with actual offers considering education, experience, and licensure/certifications directly related to the position.
