Respiratory Therapist - per diem, night shift
Job Description
The Respiratory Therapist provides Respiratory care to all age groups including neonates, pediatrics, adult and geriatrics. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing all modes of respiratory therapy using therapist driven protocols, along with arterial blood gas collection and analysis. The candidate will also be responsible for Critical Care of the adult patient, using a progressive protocol for weaning ventilator patients, V60 BiPAP machines, Bronchoscopy assists and emergency airway management. They will be working in a Level II SCN providing Bubble CPAP and short-term vent management. Along with inpatient therapy, the Respiratory Department provides services to the Emergency Department, Inpatient Psychiatric floor and outpatient services.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Provides direct patient care under physician orders and within the scope of services and licensure laws
- Works collaboratively with providers
- Reviews current orders in area of responsibility and ensures patients receive treatments as ordered
- Affirms medications via hand held nebulizer, MDI and new modes of delivery as established
- Affords assessments patients throughout the treatment and interventions cycle
- Completes and updates plans of care
- Ensures ventilator parameters are set according to physician orders
- Enters set and actual patient settings on flow sheets
- Checks and documents alarm parameters
- Completes documentation legibly
- Affords daily spontaneous breathing trial calibrations
- Affords calibration of inhaled nitric oxide system
- Affirms administration of inhaled nitric oxide in cardiac catherization laboratory, through ventilator and assists with administration of nitric oxide in the operating room
- Affords setup of BIPAP and adjustment of parameters per augmentation order set
- Affords setup of patients on Non Invasive Ventilation
- Affords non bronchial alveolar lavage procedures
- Affords assistance during procedures
- Affords assistance to ventilated patients during transport
- Affords assistance to transition ventilator patients on EMS portable ventilators until transfer occurs
- Responds to MET calls, codes blue, trauma calls and other emergencies
- Affords performance of CPR as needed
- Affords participation in collaborative research projects
- Affords drawing of arterial blood gases and sending to laboratory for analysis
- Affords performance of bedside spirometry, negative inspiratory force and vital capacity measurements
- Affords initiative to review equipment and procedures to remain proficient
- Affords assistance and response to nurses regarding questions on respiratory related issues
- Affords participation on committees or task forces
- Affords demonstration of flexibility to accept assignments
- Affords development of proficiency in new respiratory practices and initiatives
- Affords completion of patient charges, daily events, equipment set up and testing inclusive of sticker check off
- Affords organization and management of time and workflow effectively
- Affords maintenance of a patient focused and centric approach
Education
- Minimum Qualifications: Associates degree in Respiratory Therapy from an Accredited School of Respiratory Therapy
- Licensure, Certification, Registration: Massachusetts License, Certified Respiratory Therapist – Registered Respiratory Therapist
- Preferred: Current BLS certification
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Working knowledge of PC’s
- Excellent Oral and Written Communication skills
- Ability to impart specialized clinical and medical information to members of the health care team; physician, nurses
Experience
- Experience as a Staff Respiratory Therapist with a focus on critical care preferred
Pay Range
The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
