Respiratory Therapist - Per Diem
About the role
This position requires the Respiratory Therapist to be responsible for the administration of therapeutic gases, aerosols and nebulized medications and other therapeutic modalities as ordered by the physician. The Respiratory Therapist provides respiratory care consults and assessments when requested by the physician and makes daily rounds on all patients on the respiratory care service, reviews charts and does patient teaching as needed. The Respiratory Therapist draws arterial blood gases, responds to all cardiopulmonary emergencies and establishes a patent airway, by endotracheal intubation if needed and initiates mechanical ventilation and monitors same according to department policy. The Respiratory Therapist attends in-service education to keep current on the state of the art in respiratory care.
Job Duties & Essential Functions
- Makes daily rounds on all patients and reviews orders for therapy.
- Documents the results of therapy and patient response to treatment (pulse, breath sounds, sputum production, shortness of breath etc.).
- Drafts arterial blood gases without complication.
- Documents patient teaching as needed.
- Maintains patients on mechanical ventilation and adjusts settings per physician orders.
- Documents endotracheal intubation and post intubation x-ray findings.
- Responds to requests for assistance with patients with respiratory distress in a timely manner.
- Collaborates with all personnel in the proper conduct of the department.
- Maintains ethical relationships.
- Adheres to hospital and departmental rules and regulations.
- Participates in in-service programs.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- A minimum of an A.A.S. in Respiratory Care (or a related degree) required.
- A license by the State of New York Education Department as a Respiratory Therapist required.
- A registration by the NBRC (National Board for Respiratory Care) required.
Preferred Experience & Qualifications
- Four (4) years of critical care experience preferred.
- A member of the AARC (American Association for Respiratory Care) preferred.
Physical Demands
- Regularly communicates with patients, office staff and medical providers.
- Communicates accurately in these situations.
- Good visual acuity.
- Excellent hearing.
- Sufficient manual dexterity of both arms and hands to draw arterial blood samples and perform endotracheal intubation.
- Excellent oral communication skills.
