Job Summary
The Respiratory Therapist (RT) I is an introductory level respiratory care practitioner who is learning and incorporating the mission and standards of behavior of MWHC. The RT I provides competent and compassionate patient and family centered care based on respiratory processes and interdisciplinary teamwork.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
- Provides competent and compassionate patient and family centered care based on respiratory processes and interdisciplinary teamwork.
- Administers and assesses responses to respiratory therapeutic interventions with proficiency and minimal to no supervision. (e.g., aerosol therapy, oxygen therapy, bronchodilator therapy, bronchopulmonary hygiene).
- Evaluates effects of respiratory therapy treatment plan by observing, noting, and evaluating patient's progress; recommends adjustments and modifications.
- Establishes and manages mechanical ventilation.
- Maintains and ensures operation of equipment by setting up, cleaning, sterilizing, completing preventive maintenance requirements, troubleshooting malfunctions, and calling for repairs.
- Communicates other pertinent information to/from healthcare team members consistent with MWHC standards.
- Provides education and training to patients and family members.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and participating in professional societies.
- Maintains the safety of patients and Associates by adhering to hospital and departmental policies and protocols.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications RTI
- Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner in good standing within the Commonwealth of Virginia required.
- Graduate of Respiratory Care program accredited by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care preferred, Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).
- AHA BLS Provider CPR required at hire.
- AHA ACLS required within 90 days of hire at MWH.
- NRP required within 90 days of hire for SH; required for NICU only at MWH within 90 days of hire.
- Member of the American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC), preferred.
Qualifications RTII
- Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner in good standing within the Commonwealth of Virginia required.

- Graduate of Respiratory Care program accredited by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care preferred, Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) with 10+ years of experience or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).
- Minimum of one year of experience as a Respiratory Therapist II or equivalent.
- AHA BLS Provider CPR required at hire.
- AHA ACLS required within 90 days of hire at MWH.
- NRP required within 90 days of hire for SH; required for NICU only at MWH within 90 days of hire.
- One specialty credential through the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC), required for MWH & SH upon hire. For dedicated MWH-NICU, NPS is required within 6 months of hire.
- Member of the American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC), preferred.
Addendum for Associates designated as RT Applicants
- Those practicing as an RT applicant must meet the requirements set forth by VA 54.1-2955 and must:
- Be a graduate of an accredited respiratory therapy education program within in the last six months.
- This designation shall not be used beyond six months of graduation or by RT applicants that have received a failing score on any examination required by the Board for licensure.

Clinical Positions
- Required Physical Requirements: Constant (67-100% of workday) walking, standing, use of arms and hands; frequent (34-66% of workday) bending, stooping, kneeling, and squatting; ability to lift 35 lbs.; ability to push and pull 20 lbs.; auditory and visual skills to include color determination; ability to work in confined spaces; ability to reach above/overhead.
- Mental Requirements: Possesses critical thinking and analytical skills. Ability to multi-task. Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team. Capacity to cope with difficult situations. Ability to tolerate irregular hours including evenings, nights, and weekends.
- Environmental Requirements and Exposure Hazards: Potential risk of exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals. Potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens; must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Driving Requirements: Clinical positions in Mary Washington Home Health and/or Hospice must also meet driving requirements.
Compensation
- Pay Range: $35.77 - $62.11
