About the role
The Registered Respiratory Therapist reports to the shift supervisor/manager. This position is responsible for setting up and operating various types of equipment for diagnosing and treating respiratory diseases and illnesses. They administer respiratory-specific gases and medications, provide therapy for respiratory-compromised patients, respond to emergencies, initiate and discontinue Holter monitors, analyze and advise on arterial blood gas results, educate patients and families about home respiratory equipment use, assist in mechanically ventilated patient transports, assist in ordering department supplies, take and record verbal and telephone orders from physicians, and serve as a resource for nurses, physicians, residents, interns, respiratory staff, students, and other hospital staff regarding respiratory procedures.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate various types of equipment for diagnosing and treating respiratory diseases and illnesses.
- Administer respiratory-specific gases and medications, provide therapy for respiratory-compromised patients.
- Respond to emergencies throughout the hospital.
- Initiate and discontinue Holter monitors.
- Analyze and advise on arterial blood gas results.
- Take and record verbal and telephone orders from physicians as necessary.
- Assist in the transport of mechanically ventilated patients.
- May assist in the ordering of department supplies.
- Assist in attending departmental inservice/education programs.
- Participate in Quality Assurance programs and department and/or OSUMC committees.
Requirements
- Valid RT Oklahoma License
- BLS required
Qualifications
- Education: Associate Degree (preferred)
- Experience: 0 - 1 year of experience (preferred)
Skills
- Ability to set up and operate various types of respiratory equipment
- Knowledge of respiratory-specific gases and medications
- Emergency response skills
- Arterial blood gas analysis and interpretation
- Home respiratory equipment education
- Transportation of mechanically ventilated patients
