About the Role

This position is a 24-hour per week night shift role (6:00pm–6:30am) with one weekend shift per month. The Respiratory Therapist administers respiratory therapy treatments to assigned patients and is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. This role may be eligible as a Flex Respiratory Therapist, with hours adjustable by up to 12 hours per week based on patient care needs. Flex Therapists in a 24-hour position receive medical benefits consistent with those provided to regularly scheduled 36-hour therapists.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, apply, and administer respiratory therapy as directed, using a complete range of respiratory equipment.
  • Control factors such as respiratory ratio, pressure, volume, percentage of oxygen, and other gases; administer aerosol medications; continuously monitor patient’s condition.
  • Perform pulmonary consultations and recommend modes of therapy, frequency, medication, and duration.
  • Evaluate therapy effectiveness through auscultation, laboratory tests, and clinical observation; report significant changes to attending physicians and supervisors.
  • Perform basic bedside pulmonary testing and advanced pulmonary function testing in the laboratory using complex equipment to measure volumes, flows, diffusion rates, and metabolic oxygen requirements.
  • Perform blood gas analysis techniques and oversee training for new personnel in the Blood Gas Laboratory.
  • Conduct basic sleep studies.
  • Maintain required records, charts, and treatment documentation; prepare charges for submission to accounting.
  • Assist in setting up and maintaining quality control standards and programs within the department.
  • Provide direction, assistance, and guidance to assigned personnel.
  • Instruct hospital staff on basic respiratory therapy procedures and routines.
  • Assist in orientation and training of new personnel.
  • Educate patients on disease processes, breathing techniques, medications, and use of home respiratory therapy equipment.
  • Provide emergency assistance, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Assist in reconditioning and maintenance of routine therapy equipment.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and repair specialized diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, such as blood gas analyzers and computerized pulmonary function systems.
  • Follow all organizational and departmental policies, including confidentiality, quality improvement, compliance, safety, infection control, and environmental standards.
  • Maintain professional growth through seminars, workshops, conferences, or in-services to stay current with trends and fulfill CE requirements.
  • Meet annual competency and retraining requirements.
  • Attend required meetings and perform other duties as requested.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or equivalent required.
  • Respiratory Therapist license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association required.
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification from the American Academy of Pediatrics required within 3 months of hire or transfer.
  • Six months to one year of experience required.

24 hours per week, night shift (6:00pm–6:30am), with one weekend shift per month. Hours may be adjusted by up to 12 hours per week based on patient care needs.

Pay

$33.71 - $46.87 per hour (Grade SC3C51).
