Respiratory Care Practitioner III

About the role

Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates respiratory therapy care and life support to patients in all areas of the medical center, including neonatal intensive care who have deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system under the supervision of physician and prescription. Performs other patient comfort duties necessary to maintain the flow of patient care in the unit.

Qualifications

• One (1) year of recent NICU experience within the past 12 months.
• Graduate of an approved 2 year Respiratory Care program accredited by the Respiratory Care Accrediting Board (RCAB) or Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
• Respiratory Care Practitioner License (California) from National Board of Respiratory Care
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program
• Registered Respiratory Therapist Certificate
• Basic Life Support
• Two (2) years recent experience in the Neonatal intensive Care Unit in the past 24 months.

Skills

• Knowledge of patient bill of rights.
• Ability to apply and assess knowledge for neonatal, pediatric, and adult patient groups.
• Ability to participate in patient care rounds as an active member of the critical care team.
• Ability to provide direct/indirect care and service to neonatal, pediatric, and adult ages and classifications.
• Ability to evaluate patients' response to respiratory care and document required information.
• Ability to initiate new routine orders within time specified in department policies and procedures.
• Ability to measure and adjust airway cuff pressures.
• Ability to recommend changes in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
• Ability to perform respiratory diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
• Ability to obtain arterial blood samples and handle and dispose of blood samples per policy and procedure.
• Ability to perform blood gas analysis and chart critical blood gas values.
• Ability to perform cardiopulmonary and neonatal resuscitation (CPR/NR) and respond to emergencies.
• Ability to collaborate with the physician and nursing in regards to the appropriate frequency of suctioning for assigned patients.
• Ability to comply with patient safety practices/policies.
• Ability to communicate effectively with health care team members.
• Ability to participate in training and orientation of new employees.
• Ability to provide patient education.
• Ability to attend department continuing education, meetings as required.
• Ability to function at independent level in neonatal and adult critical care areas.
• Ability to assess for implementation or discontinuance of mechanical ventilation.
• Ability to implement all modalities of ventilation approved for use in the medical center.
• Ability to adjust ventilator parameters in response to changes in acid-base balance and oxygenation.
• Ability to effectively wean from mechanical ventilator per medical center protocols.
• Ability to implement all respiratory modalities of care specific to neonatal and adult critical care.
• Ability to function at independent level in neonatal critical care areas.
• Ability to assess for implementation or discontinuance of mechanical ventilation.
• Ability to implement all modalities of ventilation approved for use in the medical center.
• Ability to adjust ventilator parameters in response to changes in acid-base balance and oxygenation per protocol or Doctors order.
• Ability to effectively wean from mechanical ventilation per medical center protocols.
• Ability to implement all respiratory modalities of care specific to Neonatal critical care in this medical center.
• Ability to document therapy and intervention in medical record per medical center policy and procedure.
