Residential Counselor Full-Time

Mental Health Association of Nassau County (MHANC) is a not‑for‑profit membership organization dedicated to improving mental health in the community through advocacy, education, program development, and direct services. The organization seeks a motivated individual with a calling to help adults with mental illness by serving as a Residential Counselor. The counselor provides assistance and support to individuals diagnosed with mental illness who reside in MHANC‑operated homes, promoting greater independence through daily‑living support, personal care, skills building, community integration, and counseling.

Responsibilities

• Implement nutritional components, including shopping, menu planning, food preparation/clean‑up, and dietary needs when necessary.
• Implement activities of daily living.
• Coordinate care (psychiatric, medical, dental, etc.) by conducting collateral contacts, scheduling, and attending treatment team meetings.
• Develop service plans focused on client‑centered independent‑living skills; support resident participation and review plans quarterly.
• Conduct restorative service sessions and document progress in the client’s electronic chart.
• Manage crises and emergency situations.
• Implement all facets of the functional program, adhering to agency and program policies and procedures.
• Assist with monthly fire drills and ensure compliance with fire and safety procedures, including evaluating residents’ self‑preservation capabilities.
• Coordinate, implement, and provide transportation for recreational activities.
• Assist with maintenance and upkeep of the residence and property, reporting concerns as needed.
• Conduct and document weekly community meetings with residents to discuss and address issues or concerns.
• Attend staff meetings, in‑service training, and other training as instructed by supervisory staff.
• Work with agents of other departments to assist with coordination of care.
• Perform related duties as required and necessary.

Requirements

• High School Diploma and five years of experience in human services.
• Bachelor’s degree in human services or a related field (preferred).
• Experience in a community residence setting (preferred).
• Basic computer skills.
• Good written and oral communication skills.
• Valid NYS Driver’s License (required).
