Residential Collections Driver

Position Summary

About the role

This position involves performing refuse collection and transport duties using a side load truck equipped with a Power Take Off (PTO) and ancillary devices. Responsibilities also include maintaining assigned collection equipment and performing other related duties.

Responsibilities

• Pick up and haul garbage and refuse
• Empty refuse containers into garbage compactor truck, sweep and load spillage
• Activate controls with PTO to operate ancillary devices and engage hydraulic compactor to compact refuse
• Absorb instructions in operation of compaction truck
• Assume responsibility for assigned residential refuse collection and recycling routes
• Pick up and load a variety of recyclables including newspaper, plastic, cardboard and various metals
• Perform daily routine maintenance on assigned equipment and assist with repairs as necessary
• Perform pre-trip, trip and post-trip inspections
• Confer with supervisor regarding basic operational decisions
• Make supplementary decisions necessary to perform assigned duties
• Affirm adherence to safe work practices and procedures
• Submit periodic work activity and equipment status reports to higher-level supervisory personnel
• Operate a variety of heavy equipment and machinery, hydraulic-lift systems; transport refuse via a tractor trailer

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED
• One (1) year of driving experience which requires the possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred
• Experience/familiarity with a Power Take Off (PTO) and ancillary devices and its functions preferred
• Coursework in automotive technology, transportation technology or truck driving preferred
• Valid New Mexico Commercial Driver's License (CDL); class A or B
• City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire

Qualifications

• Successful completion of two (2) WorkKeys® Skills Assessments (Workplace Documents with a minimum score of Level 3, Graphic Literacy with a minimum score of Level 3)
• Trainees must successfully complete both classroom and OJT instruction for refuse collection service
