Residential Care Counselor

About the role

As a member of the multidisciplinary treatment team, you will assume the primary residential care counselor role. You will contribute to the formulation of a therapeutic residential treatment plan and be responsible for its implementation, observation, and documentation under the direction of the Residential Care Supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Participate in maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment.
• Develop and operationalize the residential care plan for assigned children according to established Department and Program-based procedures and policies.
• Maintain and document the level of child observation as ordered by the physician or Program Director each shift.
• Supervise assigned children in daily routines and assist with activities of daily living.
• Identify, report, and actively resolve potential problems in the Program.
• Demonstrate appropriate critical incident follow-up skills through timely verbal reporting and documentation in the child's chart.
• Intervene in disruptive or self/other-destructive situations, providing timely therapeutic intervention(s).
• Adhere to Hospital, Departmental, and Program policies and procedures.
• Attend Program meetings as assigned.
• Maintain current certification in crisis management, CPR, ERS, Safety, and OSHA.
• Actively participate in the residential child care planning process under the direction of the Residential Care Supervisor.
• Participate in the initial admission interview process as assigned.
• Support the initial therapeutic alliance with the child and family on admission.
• Complete initial milieu assessment within a 24-hour period.
• Develop an initial problem list and residential care plan within 24 hours of admission.
• Review and revise the residential care plan and problem list on a daily basis as necessary.
• Communicate individual child residential treatment plans to other Program staff and multidisciplinary treatment providers.
• Actively participate in DPC's, treatment team meetings, and shift reports.
• Be aware of Program QA indicators and related responsibilities.
• Accurately document significant child/family observations and milieu treatment in the child's chart in a timely fashion.
• Share knowledge and experience with other staff through formal and informal staff development forums.
• Support and contribute to the development of residential care plans and behavioral management strategies.
• Assist and teach children in activities of daily living and personal hygiene based on their competence level.
• Demonstrate ability to set consistent and supportive therapeutic limits within guidelines of Hospital, Program, and Department standards.
• Institute behavioral programs specific to the needs of the child in collaboration with off-line clinicians.
• Participate in and assist in organizing Program activities.
• Consistently model appropriate and therapeutic interpersonal staff/child interactions.
• Support and participate in the recreation therapy program.
• Handle crisis situations safely and effectively, utilizing the least restrictive, safe patient care alternative.
• Take initiative to seek formal and informal supervision, incorporating suggestions for improvement in job performance.

Requirements

• Baccalaureate Degree in a Human Service field. Other education and experience may be substituted at the discretion of the Hiring Manager.
• Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, considering aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns.
• Six months to one year of direct child care work with emotionally impaired youth.
• Current Bradley Hospital Crisis Management certification or enrollment in the Bradley Hospital course.
• Current CPR certification.
• Current ERS, Safety, and OSHA certification.

Pay

$18.13 - $29.90 per hour

Schedule

• Week 1: Sunday, Monday, Thursday, Friday, 2:00 PM - 10:00 PM
• Week 2: Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 2:00 PM - 10:00 PM
• Daily Hours: 8 hours

Driving is required for this role.
