Resident Treatment Worker Part-time

This position is with the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Division of State-Operated Specialty Care, Bureau of Independence Mental Health Institute (IMHI).

About the role

The Part-time Resident Treatment Worker (RTW) provides direct care to patients as prescribed by the Individual Treatment Plan. This role routinely escorts patients to activities off the ward as needed for meals, medical appointments, recreation, and other activities within the institution.

Specialized duties and other responsibilities covering a variety of practical tasks essential for the operation of the unit may be assigned to maintain an efficient, clean, and safe environment for patients and staff.

RTWs perform essential safety functions, including observing patient wards, monitoring the tone of each area to maintain a calm and therapeutic environment, identifying potential situations, utilizing de-escalation techniques, responding to emergency codes, and conducting observation and/or security checks.

This position serves as a role model for patients, so the successful candidate should exhibit strong skills in language, behavior, attitude, and personal interactions.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct care to patients as outlined in the Individual Treatment Plan
• Escort patients to meals, medical appointments, recreation, and other activities
• Maintain an efficient, clean, and safe environment on the unit
• Observe patient wards and monitor the tone of each area to maintain a therapeutic environment
• Identify and address potential situations using de-escalation techniques
• Respond to and participate in emergency codes
• Conduct observation and/or security checks
• Serve as a role model for patients through positive language, behavior, and interactions

About the facility

IMHI provides inpatient treatment and acute psychiatric services, including individualized treatment plans and support for children and adolescent patients to continue their education. Treatment may include medication, group counseling, and activity therapies. Patients are encouraged to collaborate with staff in formulating their own plans.

Pay

This is a part-time position with a shift differential of $0.90 per hour for second shift and $1.00 per hour for third shift in addition to the base pay.

Location

Independence Mental Health Institute is located in Independence, Iowa, a city of approximately 6,000 in scenic Northeast Iowa. The Wapsipinicon River flows through town, offering recreational opportunities such as canoeing and fishing. Independence features a newer public library, trails, and Cedar Rock State Park, which includes a Frank Lloyd Wright home.

Independence is 30 minutes from Waterloo/Cedar Falls (home of the UNI Panthers), 45 minutes from Cedar Rapids, and 1 hour from Iowa City (home of the Iowa Hawkeyes).

Requirements

No specific education or experience is required.

Designated positions in this job class require applicants to obtain the required Commercial Driver’s License or Chauffeur’s License and endorsements within a period determined by the appointing authority at the time of hire.
