About the role
The Registered Medication Aide is responsible for administering medications and providing compassionate care to residents in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. This role requires adherence to Viva Senior Living’s policies, maintaining certification, and upholding the highest standards of resident dignity and service.
Responsibilities
- Administers and accurately records the administration of medications for residents as prescribed by the physician in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Observes, records, and reports symptoms and conditions of residents related to medication interactions, adverse drug reactions, or side effects to the Resident Care Director.
- Determines and records the effectiveness of medications in a timely and accurate manner, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations and promoting resident rights.
- Stores medications safely and accurately, following established policies and procedures.
- Monitors medications to ensure accountability measures are taken during ordering, receipt, administration, and shift changes.
- Routinely inspects, cleans, and monitors equipment and supplies to ensure resident safety; reports issues to the Resident Care Director.
- Obtains, records, and reports vital signs as indicated during medication administration.
- Demonstrates proper infection control practices, including the use of Universal Precautions and adherence to OSHA’s Blood-borne Pathogen Standard.
- Communicates accurately and factually with residents, staff, and others; seeks clarification or refers questions to the Resident Care Director as needed.
- Performs duties as assigned, including those listed in the Resident Care Associate job description.
- Arrives at work on time and fulfills scheduled shifts.
- Ensures residents and families receive high-quality, compassionate care that recognizes individual needs and rights.
- Reports occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, or hazardous chemicals per facility policy.
- Reports work-related injuries and illnesses immediately to a supervisor.
- Completes all assigned training and skills competency as a condition of employment.
- Participates in life safety and emergency drills and trainings.
- Fulfills responsibilities during the activation of the facility’s emergency plan, including assisting with resident evacuation if necessary.
- Maintains confidentiality of Protected Health Information in all communications.
- Reports non-compliance with policies, procedures, regulations, or breaches in confidentiality to appropriate personnel.
- Protects residents from abuse and cooperates with all investigations; reports allegations of abuse, neglect, misappropriation, or mistreatment.
- Reports retaliation or discrimination to the Human Resource Director and Compliance Officer.
- Reports suspicions of a crime to law enforcement and the state agency.
Requirements
- Successfully completed coursework and examinations to obtain certification as a Resident Care Associate per state regulations.
- Compliance with federal, state, and local health and regulatory standards.
- Completion of required continuing education and maintenance of certification per state regulations.
- Knowledge of state medication techniques.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a congenial environment while maintaining compassion and dignity for residents.
- Adherence to Viva Senior Living’s attendance policies and terms of employment as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
- Annual verification of a negative TB skin test.
Physical and Sensory Requirements
- Ability to move intermittently throughout the workday.
- Ability to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
- Ability to see and hear, or use prosthetics to enable these senses to function adequately for the role.
- Meets general health requirements as set forth by facility policies, including a medical and physical examination.
- Ability to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, or agitated residents.
- Ability to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a height of 5 feet and carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet; may be required to assist in resident evacuation during emergencies.
