About the Role

The Resident Assistant (RA) at North Central Missouri College is a student who lives on the residence hall floor to serve as the primary resource for building community and helping students connect with each other and NCMC. The objectives of the RA position include building a positive community on their floor and within the hall, assisting residents with both personal and academic concerns, knowledge of and upholding College policy, and serving as a resource and/or liaison for the College.

Responsibilities

  • Community Building and Peer Relationships
    • Become personally acquainted with each resident on his/her floor and build a rapport that will foster open communication.
    • Implement and encourage the development and maintenance of a community spirit on his/her floor, including social, educational, recreational, and floor and hall council activities.
    • Assist new students in their adaptation to College life, preparing them for future College/University residence halls after completing their two years at NCMC.
    • Serve as a positive role model for residents.
    • Implement and support the use of community standards on your floor and in the hall.
  • Peer Assistance
    • Develop the capacity to listen and understand, and be flexible and open-minded in responding to student needs and concerns.
    • Encourage and assist individuals in finding their own solutions.
    • Refer residents to departmental, campus, and community resources as needed.
    • Develop trust and maintain confidentiality in the peer assistant role.
    • Maintain familiarity with campus and community offices (e.g., Career Services, Student Support Services, Academic Resource Center, Office of Resident Life Director) and make referrals when appropriate.
  • Residence Hall Programming
    • Utilize existing campus and community events that meet student needs and interests.
    • Coordinate events to promote interpersonal interaction and community development.
    • Offer educational or needs-based programs for targeted groups or the entire residence hall population.
    • Report all programs and community builders as directed by the Residence Hall Coordinator (RHC).
  • Administrative Duties
    • Assume duty responsibility according to the hall schedule and remain on call as required.
    • Assist in opening and closing the hall, preparation of rosters, damage inventories, and cooperation with Campus Dining staff.
    • Serve on duty 1 night per week and at least 1 weekend per month, scheduled during training before each semester.
    • Submit a daily duty report at the end of each duty night to the RHCs and Director of Resident Life.
  • Health and Safety
    • Become familiar with fire safety equipment and coordinate the fire drill program on the floor.
    • Report all safety hazards and maintenance concerns.
    • Assist the Residence Hall Coordinator in emergencies as assigned.
  • Residence Hall Regulations
    • Encourage students to act responsibly and considerately toward others.
    • Know and adhere to College policies and communicate them to residents.
    • Develop consistent methods of enforcing rules and regulations and assist students in self-enforcement.
    • Take appropriate action to protect the health, safety, and rights of residents.
  • Staff Training and Communication
    • Provide the Residence Hall Coordinator with accurate and timely information about the floor environment via weekly reflections, 1:1 meetings, and staff meetings.
    • Attend and participate in all training and staff meetings.
    • Develop and promote a positive working relationship with all residence hall staff, including RAs, RCs, secretaries, custodial/maintenance, and Campus Dining employees.
  • Other related duties as assigned, with flexibility for individual hall needs and creativity in job performance.

Requirements

  • Enrolled as a student at North Central Missouri College.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher at the time of application and maintained during employment (incoming freshmen must have a 3.0 GPA).
  • Available for employment for two semesters upon initial hire.
  • Not on any College probation (academic or social) and in compliance with all College policies during employment.
  • Position must be one of your highest priorities; outside employment and extracurricular involvement require approval from the Resident Hall Coordinator and Director of Residence Life.
  • May work no more than 13 hours per week without prior approval.

Benefits

  • Remuneration of $500 per semester.
  • Guaranteed a single room at half the single occupancy rate.

Additional Notes

  • Employment is for the academic year, subject to satisfactory performance.
  • Evaluations will be conducted each semester by the Residence Hall Coordinator.
  • Circumstances may require transfer within the College Residence Hall system at the discretion of the Office of Residence Life.
  • Loss or misuse of the issued Sub-Master Key may result in termination.
  • RAs are expected to present a positive attitude and serve as role models, including responsible behavior and alcohol use.
