About the role

The Residence Worker / Food Service Worker position at CFH's Shelter operates under contract with the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS). As a contract agency, CFH is subject to inspections and audits by DHS, the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, and the Coalition for the Homeless of New York City.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the safety and security of all residents in the facility through staff-specific posts, security rounds, enforcing facility rules and regulations, and communicating incidents to supervisory personnel.
  • Provide timely and effective responses to client emergencies, including managing physical or verbal altercations and intervening in medical emergencies.
  • Administer operational procedures to ensure access control, reception, fire patrol, surveillance, safety, and compliance with government regulations.
  • Distribute and control the inventory of client supplies, including meal distribution on all shifts.
  • Prepare, heat, and serve nutritious meals while ensuring compliance with health regulations and safety codes.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the dining area, including cleanup after all meals.
  • Understand weights and measures for portion control and maintain service and preparation areas in a clean and organized manner.
  • Receive all incoming food deliveries, maintain cleanliness and order of food storage areas, and attend ongoing training for all food service staff.
  • Participate in training and staff development activities to acquire and maintain interpersonal and operational skills.
  • Register new clients, orient them to the facility, and ensure completion and distribution of mandated documentation.
  • Facilitate vacancy control through liaison with funding agencies and communicate with other staff within an interdisciplinary context.
  • Perform hourly facility runs to maintain resident areas, monitor recreational rooms, laundry rooms, and cafeterias, and conduct daily inspections of resident units.
  • Aid in medication calls as required and assist in removing resident property from the client storage area.
  • Escort clients to appointments and perform other duties as assigned by supervisory staff.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid NYC DOHMH Food Protection Certificate or equivalent
  • 1-year experience working with homeless or special needs populations
  • Excellent communication skills
