About the role
This is a 10-month live-in position with employment dates August - May. June and July are designated as a seasonal layoff period (specific dates provided prior to the layoff period each year). This role is fully in person (not hybrid or remote).
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and participate in planning, development and implementation of educational and special programming for residential students, including healthy living and learning communities
- Provide 24/7 coverage of assigned residence halls and others as required; provide evening and weekend coverage; provide on-call coverage during evenings, weekends and holidays as scheduled
- Supervise and train Resident Advisors and work-study students; assign and review work, maintain standards, coordinate activities, assist with selection of new employees, evaluate performance, act on employee problems, and recommend discipline and discharge
- Coordinate opening and closing procedures for residence hall(s); oversee check-in/check-out procedures
- Report damages to residence hall structures, equipment, furnishings; request appropriate maintenance and repair work
- Schedule, attend, facilitate and participate in staff meetings and hall council meetings; develop and initiate actions to address punch lists of university residential buildings; follow up to ensure maintenance requests are addressed timely
- Work with Campus Police to develop comprehensive safety program for assigned residence hall; respond to residence hall emergencies; conduct fire and emergency drills as scheduled; summon emergency personnel as needed
- Conduct periodic inspections to monitor residence hall cleanliness and safety; request maintenance and custodial assistance as needed
- Communicate and enforce established standards for student behavior; serve as role model for professionalism and civility; monitor activities and behavior of students; maintain living environment conducive to academic study and positive social interaction
- Mediate student disputes; provide general counseling and disciplinary action as required; attend and participate in judiciary hearings
- Track residence hall expenditures
- Maintain records of residence hall activities, incidents, etc.
- Represent department to parents, guests and members of the University community
- Receive, review, prepare and submit various records and reports including disciplinary records and letters, maintenance schedules and records, activity checks, fliers, requisitions, time sheets, incident reports, cab vouchers, monthly reports, health/safety inspections reports, memos, correspondence, etc.
- Interact and communicate with various groups including supervisor, other department heads and employees, subordinates, faculty members, students, parents, guests, community service workers, sales representatives, contractors, and general public
- Perform general clerical work including entering computer data, copying and filing documents, answering telephone, typing reports and correspondence
- Perform routine housekeeping duties as needed; move and/or install room furnishings; operate vacuum, wet vacuum, computer, printer, copier, telephone
- Serve on various campus committees as assigned
- Perform related duties as required
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
- One to two years of experience working in Housing and Residence Life, Academic Support, Student Life, or another unit area in Student Affairs
- Strong analytical and communication skills
- Sound professional judgment, initiative and ability to work effectively with diverse groups including students, faculty, and staff
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications and social media platforms
- Creative, organized and able to multitask with strong attention to detail and time management
- Flexible with strong customer orientation and ability to work well in collaborative team environment
- Must be able to provide day, evening, weekend on-call hours on a flexible and as-needed basis
- The equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered
Preferred qualifications
- CPR and first aid certification
- Some knowledge of event planning, organizational management, and student development theory
