Research Transportation Engineer or Research Scientist

About the role

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) seeks a researcher to answer practical questions about how to make roads safer. The position may be based in Arlington or Ruckersville, Virginia, and is eligible for up to 50% telework. This role is for someone who wants to develop and lead applied research that can influence what agencies, communities, and practitioners do next.

Responsibilities

• Develop research questions and lead studies addressing roadway safety issues
• Design and conduct research within the candidate’s area of expertise
• Work with state and local agencies, community partners and other stakeholders on safety-related research and evaluation projects
• Collect, manage and analyze data from field studies and other sources
• Manage research and data collection conducted by outside contractors
• Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and other outlets
• Present findings to technical and nontechnical audiences
• Contribute to the broader transportation safety community through collaborations, presentations and professional activities

Qualifications

We are interested in candidates with experience in either of the following:

• Applied transportation engineering research related to roadway design, infrastructure treatments or traffic operations
• Designing and evaluating behavioral or community-based safety interventions, including work with communities and local partners

Pay

Salary range: $90,000-$173,000. Mid-level salary range: $90,000-$133,000. Senior-level salary range: $117,000-$173,000. Compensation is based on experience level, position and office location.
