Research Technologist - Cell and Biological Systems

This position is located at the Penn State University College of Medicine in the Department of Cell and Biological Systems in Hershey, PA.

About the role

The research technologist will study metabolism, mitochondrial function, and cell death mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases, focusing on mitochondria-mediated cell death pathways in aging and Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis. Responsibilities include large-scale protein purification, animal breeding, genotyping, mitochondria isolation, and other laboratory procedures.

The role involves developing, designing, and conducting research projects in life sciences disciplines such as neuroscience, physiology, pharmacology, and biotechnology. The technologist will advise faculty and researchers on methodology and equipment, analyze and report results, and oversee daily project operations.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research projects or experiments related to life science areas of study; ensure protocol adherence and evaluate results.
• Perform experimental tasks including assays, material tests, specimen evaluation, and cultures.
• Execute and develop data collection procedures; record, correlate, and analyze data; prepare analysis summaries.
• Contribute to the design of research methods; identify potential problems and recommend solutions.
• Make recommendations for data collection, management, and visualization software.
• Train users in equipment operation and research techniques; explain and demonstrate technology and equipment capabilities.
• Develop project protocols; provide input on feasibility of goals and objectives; ensure quality, cost-effectiveness, and timeliness.
• Author papers, proposals, presentations, and reports to disseminate research findings.
• May oversee operation of a specialized research area or laboratory.
• May supervise staff members, including hiring, development, and performance management.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
• No prior relevant work experience required; previous relevant work experience accepted in lieu of education.
• This position requires PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $36,888.00 - $53,532.00.
