Research Technician II

About the role

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute–designated cancer center in Washington. The Center operates eight clinical care sites and maintains network affiliations with hospitals in five states. A Research Technician II position is available in the Collisson Lab within the Human Biology Division to focus on lung or pancreatic cancer using genetically engineered mouse models, cell lines, and clinically derived samples. The ideal candidate will independently develop, guide, and complete research projects.

Responsibilities

• Perform experiments at the bench level to support investigative work
• Prepare and maintain laboratory reagents, stocks, cultures or cell lines
• Perform and modify documented protocols and assays
• Maintain laboratory records and compile data on experiments and assays
• Interpret and report on experimental results
• Perform statistical analysis of test results and prepare written reports on work performed
• Operate and carry out basic maintenance of laboratory equipment
• Order and maintain appropriate levels of supplies
• May supervise work-study students
• Participate in lab meetings and journal clubs
• Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field
• 2 years of experience working in a lab outside of school coursework

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and independently
• Strong ability to think rationally, problem solve and troubleshoot experiments
• Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work independently
• Good communication and organizational skills
• Self-motivation, ability to multitask and to work within a collaborative environment
• Prepare sequencing libraries from DNA (and, where applicable, RNA-derived cDNA) samples using established kits and protocols; execute fragmentation, end-repair, adapter ligation, size selection, and PCR amplification steps; perform bead-based cleanup and normalization
• Highly proficient in a variety of molecular and cellular biology techniques, with strong fundamental knowledge of cancer genetics and epigenetics
• Molecular biology techniques, including molecular cloning, nucleic acid isolation, PCR, and protein expression analysis
• Experience performing nucleic acid quality and quantity assessment
• Experience performing gene transfer studies using lentiviral infection of human cell cultures
• Experience with computational processing of RNA and DNA sequencing files
• Experience with primary and established immortalized cell cultures
• Experience establishing and maintaining mouse colonies

Pay

The hourly pay range for this position is $27.01 to $38.45; pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
