About the Department

North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (NC State CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians, veterinary scientists, and biomedical scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems. The Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences at the NC State CVM trains veterinarians, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows in research-based careers focused on discovering new information about animal and human health and disease and using those findings to enhance animal and human health and wellbeing.

About the Role

The Burclaff Lab is interested in better understanding how metabolism and cellular energetics are regulated within intestinal stem cells and how dynamic regulation underlies the intestine’s ability to maintain itself at homeostasis and following injuries or disease. Our major focus is on the stem cell compartment, studying how the intestinal stem cells maintain their identity, undergo fate decisions, regulate cell cycle, and the dynamic plasticity that occurs within crypt populations following injury. We use a mix of animal and human models, including cutting-edge genetically modified primary human intestinal stem cell cultures, to advance our understanding of the mammalian intestine.

We are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented team member to support research operations, assisting with experiments, and assist with lab management. This role combines hands-on scientific research with core lab oversight in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Execute experiments using animal models (mouse line maintenance/tissue collection), cell lines, and primary cultures.
  • Perform molecular biology techniques (RNA/protein work, staining, tissue sectioning, live-image analysis).
  • Oversee day-to-day lab operations, manage equipment and inventory, and coordinate multiple concurrent projects.
  • Maintain accurate records, manage scientific data, and contribute to publications, grant applications, and presentations.
  • Troubleshoot experiments and equipment; proficient in standard lab instruments, computers, and data-management tools.
  • Occasional evenings and weekends as needed.

Requirements

  • Prior research experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, and able to work independently while fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in mammalian primary cell culture (establishment and maintenance).
  • Experience in molecular biology and biochemistry techniques (PCR, RT-qPCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA/RNA/protein extraction, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry).
  • Experience in mouse colony management (animal handling, breeding, weaning, genotyping) and in vivo experimentation.

Schedule

Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (with some flexibility) plus occasional evenings and weekends.

Pay

$36,000–$40,000 per year.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Flexible Spending Account.
  • Retirement programs.
  • Disability and life insurance.
  • Accident plan.
  • Paid time off and other leave programs.
  • 12 paid holidays each year.
  • Tuition and academic assistance.
  • Childcare benefits.
