About the Role

Sigma-1, Fabrication Manufacturing Sciences, is seeking highly motivated individuals to support R&D component manufacturing within the Machining and Inspection (M&I) Team. The M&I Team operates a fully equipped machine shop, including manual and CNC turning, manual and CNC milling, wire electrical discharge machining, and 3D printing, as well as an inspection lab. The team supports the entire Sigma Division, including Foundry, Thermomechanical Processing, and Welding & Joining, by performing manufacturing operations—primarily machining—on a wide range of materials, including unique special materials with specific hazards (e.g., radiation, pyrophoric). The role involves producing high-quality components and subassemblies for production, experimental programs, and special projects.

Multiple positions are available at the Research Tec 2 level, with responsibilities tailored to applicant interests. Successful candidates may support manufacturing operations, including equipment calibration, tooling and material inventory, work scheduling, or develop manual and CNC machining skills.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with shop managers, machinists, engineers, and team members to execute projects and activities within the shop.
• Support manufacturing operations through equipment calibration, inventory and procurement, and work scheduling.
• Perform precision measurements to meet quality requirements (with appropriate supervision).
• Operate hand tools, shop equipment, manual machines, and CNC equipment (with appropriate supervision).
• Maintain shop floor housekeeping and coordinate inventory/purchasing of machine tooling.
• Work with machinists and engineers to identify and evaluate new or improved tooling.
• Maintain full safety and security training compliance in all activities.
• Foster a respectful, inclusive, and discrimination-free work environment.

Requirements

• Ability to follow instructions, procedures, plans, and Laboratory requirements.
• Knowledge of and experience with computer systems and applications.
• Experience working in a secure environment where property and/or data security is required.
• Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.

Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 3 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Qualifications

• Active Q clearance.
• Knowledge of common computer software applications (e.g., MS Office Suite).
• Familiarity with LANL facilities and procedures.
• Experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Experience working with or around chemicals and other hazardous materials.
• Aptitude for hands-on work with equipment and tools.

Essential Job Functions

• Good hand-eye coordination and fine motor control.
• Ability to lift/carry 30–40 lbs.
• Ability to acquire and maintain rigorous training as required.

Work Environment

The work location is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. Regular appointment employees must serve a 1-year commitment in the position before applying for other Laboratory jobs.

Clearance

This position requires a Q clearance, which typically requires U.S. citizenship. Selected applicants will undergo a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government. Additional access authorization may be required for classified information, though this is rare for dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance is ultimately a decision of the Federal Government.

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy, including random drug testing. Use of marijuana, even if legal under state law, remains prohibited under federal law and will result in termination.
