Research Support Manager - Cancer Center - Hybrid
Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa is seeking a Research Support Manager to oversee the development, preparation, submission, and post-award administration of grants and contracts. This role coordinates large, multi-project grants such as the P30 Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) and the P50 Neuroendocrine Tumor (NET) SPORE, working across multiple departments and institutions. Hybrid work within Iowa is available after a 6-month onsite training period, with most work conducted on the U of I/UI Health Care campus.
Responsibilities
- Grant Exploration and Development
- Respond to faculty inquiries about grant opportunities, assess economic feasibility, and establish timelines to meet deadlines.
- Monitor proposal development, create budgets, ensure compliance with internal and sponsor deadlines, and obtain institutional approvals.
- Train users on electronic submission systems (e.g., Cayuse, Grants.gov, NIH RPPR, Proposal Central).
- Identify and evaluate funding sources, assist investigators with guideline interpretation, and serve as a liaison to external agencies.
- Coordinate grant submissions for HCCC-affiliated faculty, staff, and students, including budget preparation and document review.
- Prepare proposals, pre-proposals, letters of collaboration, and maintain current knowledge of submission processes.
- Oversee input validation, system integrity, and reporting for the Research Evaluation System (EVAL) for P30 CCSG data.
- Guide staff on UIRIS electronic routing forms and provide tutorials as needed.
- Meet with new faculty to review grant application processes and enhance preparation skills.
- Post-Award Administration/Financial Responsibility
- Manage a portfolio of externally and internally funded grants, including forecasting and interpreting guidelines.
- Oversee budgets, ensure program reports are completed, and assist with budget development and analysis.
- Establish fiscal controls, monitor expenditures, and advise on materials, equipment, staff recruitment, and travel.
- Review financial status, prepare progress reports, manage funding allocations, and ensure compliance with State/Federal guidelines.
- Analyze and report financial data, monitor equipment procurements, and meet monthly with PIs to review projects.
- Assist in the annual budget process in coordination with leadership.
- Seed Grant Program Administration
- Oversee HCCC Seed Grant Programs, including support, announcements, evaluation, and awards.
- Secure updates and year-end reporting for seed grants and facilitate the HCCC Research Review Committee.
- Strategic Planning and Development
- Develop and implement strategic planning to meet grants-related goals and provide training on new guidelines.
- Assemble, edit, and distribute program-related materials and coordinate site visits and retreats.
- Oversee grant-related newsletters, including content collection, layout, and distribution.
- Participate in the HCCC Research Executive Committee and assist with strategic planning documents.
- Compliance
- Ensure compliance with grant terms, University policies, and State/Federal regulations.
- Prepare reports for the Institutional Review Board (IRB-01) and Animal Care and Use (ACURF).
- Collaborate with staff to accrue data, review protocols, and maintain documentation.
- Communications and Reporting
- Review and submit Federal Grant Agency Personnel Effort Reports quarterly and annually.
- Prepare non-competing reports and specialized reports for funding agencies or PIs.
- Conduct studies and prepare materials for presentations, publications, and leadership correspondence.
- Design and implement reports (e.g., tracking submitted/funded proposals, identifying new members).
- Serve as a liaison to agencies like NIH/NCI, Iowa Department of Health, American Cancer Society, and collaborating institutions.
- Supervision and Training
- Supervise assigned staff, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, and policy compliance.
- Develop training programs for new and existing staff and educate on new processes.
Qualifications
Exceptional ability to work collaboratively across multiple departments and institutions. Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills. Proficiency in electronic grant submission systems (e.g., Cayuse, Grants.gov) and financial management. Experience with large, multi-project grants (e.g., P30, P50) is highly desirable.
Schedule
- Full-time (100% time).
- Monday–Friday, standard business hours.
- Hybrid work arrangement available after a 6-month onsite training period.
