Research Software Engineer at the StarPlan Section of the Globe Institute

About the role

The StarPlan section of the Globe Institute at The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen is looking for a Research Software Engineer with effect from 15 August 2026. The position is for 4 and half months.

Tasks

• Maintenance, development, and documentation of the planet formation module within Genga, a state-of-the-art GPU-based symplectic N-Body integrator.
• Optimization of the module for performance in HPC cluster environments like the Tycho cluster at the University of Copenhagen and the Gefion GPU supercomputer.
• Collaboration with an international team of researchers, including Michiel Lambrechts and Anders Johansen, on understanding the origins of planetary formation through a theoretical and computational approach.
• Development and support of code in various ongoing scientific code development projects at the theoretical planet formation group using Python, Fortran, C, and C++, particularly in the context of high-performance supercomputing at national and international facilities.

We expect

• An academic background.
• Experience with developing software for scientific purposes.
• Familiarity with GPU computing and the CUDA programming language.
• Experience with managing large-scale code development in scientific context.
• A PhD in astrophysics.
• Written and spoken fluency in English.

Terms of salary and employment

The employment and salary is made in accordance with the Circular on the Collective Agreement concerning academics in the state sector concluded between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

The employment will be as academic research staff. The salary is based on seniority. Negotiation for salary supplement is possible. The working time are 37 hours per week on average. The working hours are flexible.
