Research Software Engineer
Amentum is seeking a HPC Research Software Engineer to join the team at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) under the JETSII contract. This role supports the Flight Sciences Laboratory (FSL), a key HPC lab that enables critical analyses for NASA programs including the International Space Station (ISS), Orion, Space Launch System (SLS), Commercial Crew Program, Moon Base, and Human Landing System (HLS). The FSL operates a high-performance computing environment with over 800 nodes, 26,000 cores, and 10 PB of storage, serving more than 1,000 users.
About the role
This position focuses on developing, deploying, and optimizing software for use in the Flight Sciences Lab (FSL) and other NASA HPC resources. You will collaborate with a diverse team to advance NASA’s deep space exploration missions while contributing to systems that benefit life on Earth.
Responsibilities
- Partner with FSL users to evaluate and optimize software development practices, ensuring project success.
- Participate in planning and major development efforts for flight software, Guidance and Navigation, and analysis projects.
- Work closely with partners and external contractors to meet software requirements and address bugs.
- Mentor team members on best practices for software development and engineering in HPC environments.
- Support HPC services by assisting users and troubleshooting issues.
Requirements
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.
- 4+ years of software engineering experience outside of degree (or 5–10 years of related experience for higher-level roles).
- Proficiency in multiple programming languages, including compiled and interpreted languages.
- Experience with build systems (e.g., GNU Make), version control (Git), containers, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Strong problem-solving, task planning, and communication skills.
- Daily experience working in a Linux OS, including command line interface (CLI).
Preferred Qualifications
- 6+ years of experience in addition to the degree.
- Experience developing software for HPC environments.
- Familiarity with Monte Carlo workflows and optimization for HPC.
- Experience with Trick-based simulation workflows and related toolsets.
- Knowledge of modern software practices, including test-driven development, Agile methodologies, and generative AI coding assistants.
- Experience integrating C++, Fortran, Python, and shell-based workflows in HPC or simulation environments.
- Experience with MPI-based workflows, Podman, GitLab, and Jenkins.
- Active participation in the open-source software community.
