Research Services Manager

About the role

The Department of Radiology, University of Wisconsin - Madison, School of Medicine & Public Health is seeking a Research Services Manager (RSM) who will serve as the liaison and project manager for projects involving integrated diagnostics using AI in the Integrated Diagnostics and Analytics (IDiA) Laboratory for Precision Medicine, directed by Dr. Pallavi Tiwari. The research conducted by the IDiA Lab utilizes medical imaging, digital pathology, clinical, and EHR data to build and optimize AI and machine learning models for oncology, neurological, and chronic diseases.

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Responsibilities

• Serves as a subject matter expert and unit liaison. Provides updates on project components and timelines to stakeholders as needed.
• Develops operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and unit objectives.
• Assists with the development and auditing of project-specific budgets.
• Assists with the design, monitoring, and execution of project-specific experiments. Identifies and resolves technical issues.
• May direct the day-to-day activities of staff and resolve routine personnel issues.
• Develops and facilitates research-specific presentations to internal and external audiences.
• Assists with the development and submission of research grant proposals.
• Coordinates internal and external research collaborations including management of data use agreements (DUAs) and datasets shared under those agreements.
• Coordinates efforts of the lab regarding multiple large national and international projects including data acquiring, deidentification, clinical data management, and database upkeep.
• Provides budgetary oversight of several federal grants, staff supervision, and regulatory compliance.

Requirements

• At least 1 year of supervisory experience and/or experience leading a team.
• Project management experience.
• Experience with pre- and post-award research administration including grant proposal development and/or budget planning/management.
• Experience with research compliance including IRB protocols and data use agreements (DUAs).
• Professional and effective oral and written communication skills. Must be able to relay information to faculty PIs and other researchers and prepare reports as needed.
• Effective management skills: ability to lead, train, work with, and elicit cooperation from team members and staff.
• Ability to problem-solve effectively with the ability to develop and implement alternative solutions as needed.
• Ability to learn and apply new ideas, techniques, processes, policies, functions, etc. Must be highly motivated and a self-starter.
• A willingness to acquire further skills and to train research team members (including students) on these skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; focus in biomedical science, research administration, business, or a related field by start date preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

• Research experience in medicine, radiology, and/or medical imaging analysis techniques.
• Familiarity with AI and machine learning methods, including deep learning in research.
• Familiarity with tumor segmentation/classification methods.
• Programming/scripting and/or database design/management experience.
• Familiarity with high-performance computing and/or cloud computing platforms (e.g., Azure).

Pay

The starting salary for the position is $80,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
