About the role

The Basak and Calero Laboratories in the Department of Anesthesiology are interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms that mediate brain injury and recovery after a cardiac arrest. Our research uses translational animal models of cardiac arrest with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) across the lifespan to study the role of various molecular pathways in mediating neuronal cell death, synaptic loss, and cognitive dysfunction. We are currently seeking a Research Services Professional (RSP) to perform small-animal surgeries and neurobehavioral testing in support of these projects. The RSP will also be responsible for tissue collections and histological analyses related to projects. This position will work in a collaborative team environment and will assist with lab maintenance responsibilities, including regulatory compliance, maintenance of the mouse colony, and other experiments as determined by the supervisors. Selected candidates will have access to state-of-the-art equipment and resources to conduct their research. The RSP is expected to attend weekly lab meetings and departmental research seminars. The position offers an excellent opportunity to gain insights into the pathophysiology of brain injury in the setting of ischemia and support your professional development in a collaborative research environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform rodent survival surgeries and post-operative care.
  • Perform neurobehavioral testing to assess cognitive and motor outcomes.
  • Manage animal colonies.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate lab records.
  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions.
  • Lab Management responsibilities including lab ordering and regulatory compliance.
  • Support training of other lab members and collaborators.

  • Learn and perform cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in rodents.
  • Monitor animals that have surgeries and provide support for animal husbandry, as needed.
  • Learn and perform histology and immunohistochemistry brain tissue from animals.
