Research Scientist III (Epidemiology)

Grant funded position. Valid and unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S. is required; visa sponsorship is not available. Travel up to 25% of the time. Must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location and be located in or willing to relocate to New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts prior to hire. Hybrid work schedule with occasional weekends, after-hours, and holidays.

About the role

Health Research, Inc. is seeking a Research Scientist III to work within the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), Office of Science and Technology in the Health, Wealth & Wellbeing Unit. The incumbent will lead the planning, development, and implementation of research and applied epidemiology analysis activities examining relationships among socioeconomic conditions, population health outcomes, and overall wellbeing, assessment, and evaluation activities that demonstrate how increased wealth improves health outcomes and general wellbeing.

This position focuses on assessing community-based economic and public health initiatives and analyzing their association with population health indicators and related outcomes, as well as examining and assessing community wealth building initiatives and their impact on social determinants of health and health disparities.

Responsibilities

• Develop comprehensive evaluation and analysis plans, including methodologies and algorithms for measuring health, economic, demographic, and community-level indicators.
• Assess the impact of unit programming on community health and economic indicators such as wealth.
• Identify, obtain, and manage datasets.
• Develop surveys for data collection.
• Build and validate relevant measures.
• Produce reports, publications, and presentations summarizing findings.
• Collaborate with NYSDOH partners to support analytical projects.
• Provide technical guidance to staff.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in public health, epidemiology, statistics, a related social science, or a closely related field and four years of research experience; OR
• Master’s degree in a related field and three years of research experience; OR
• Doctorate degree in a related field and one year of research experience.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Public Health or a related field and three years of experience in public health research, surveillance, or evaluation OR a doctoral degree in Public Health or a related field and one year of experience in public health research, surveillance, or evaluation.
• Demonstrated proficiency in data analysis, statistical methodology, interpretation, and dissemination of data for varied audiences.
• Demonstrated proficiency utilizing advanced data analysis techniques to examine non-health related data such as net worth, income, employment, housing, and education metrics to assess their relationship with wealth and health outcomes.
• Strong data analysis, data management, data visualization, and evaluation experience, particularly with economic and large health-related datasets.
• Professional and/or academic knowledge of public health concepts, including social determinants of health, health disparities, and health equity, as they relate to population health outcomes and wellbeing.
• Experience supervising staff.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated intermediate or advanced proficiency using SAS including proficient use of SAS BASE, SQL, GRAPH, STAT, ODS, MACRO, ArcGIS, Tableau.
• Demonstrated experience with survey design and implementation.
• Demonstrated experience in creating infographics and graphical presentations of data.

Pay

Annual salary: $100,379. Positions with a designated work location in New York City, Nassau, Rockland, Suffolk, or Westchester Counties will receive a $4,000 annual downstate adjustment (pro-rated for part-time positions).
