Research Scientist I

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required. Visa sponsorship may be available for this position, in accordance with applicable federal requirements. The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location and must be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states prior to hire: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts. This position is fully onsite and does not allow telecommuting.

About the role

The Research Scientist I will be part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center’s mission in the New York State Department of Health’s efforts to protect and promote the health of New York’s citizens. The role involves the analysis of ultra-trace levels of organic chemicals in human and environmental specimens, including sample preparation, extraction, instrumental analysis, data analysis, and preparation of data reports. The incumbent will contribute to the development and validation of high-resolution mass spectrometric methods for analyzing ultra-trace levels of organic chemicals and will maintain LC-MS/MS and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) instruments.

Responsibilities

• Analyze ultra-trace levels of organic chemicals in human and environmental specimens, including sample preparation, extraction, instrumental analysis, data analysis, and preparation of data reports.
• Develop and validate high-resolution mass spectrometric methods for the analysis of ultra-trace levels of organic chemicals in human and environmental specimens.
• Maintain LC-MS/MS and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) instruments.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years of research experience; OR a master’s degree in a related field and one year of research experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in method development and analysis of a multiclass of environmental chemicals (e.g., plasticizers, environmental phenols, pesticides) through a single extraction and LC-MS/MS analysis in human biological specimens such as urine and blood.
• Experience measuring single-class organic environmental chemicals such as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), organophosphate ester (OPE) flame retardants and plasticizers (OPFR), oxidative stress biomarkers, pesticides, plasticizers, environmental phenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), tobacco metabolites, forest fire biomarkers, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in human biological specimens at ultra-trace levels.
• Experience participating in NIH-funded human biomonitoring research projects.
• Experience participating in proficiency testing programs.

Pay

Annual salary: $69,764. Positions with a designated work location in New York City, Nassau, Rockland, Suffolk, or Westchester Counties will receive a $4,000 annual downstate adjustment (pro-rated for part-time positions).
