About the role
Manage the personnel functions of animal husbandry caregivers while performing technical duties as needed. Provide daily oversight of personnel and animal operations, lead special projects as assigned, and take responsibility for training and developing team members. Work under the supervision of Work Leaders in the BRU function.
Responsibilities
- Maintain departmental productivity, staffing levels, and participate in the hiring and termination of employees.
- Assist with training, performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, and address employee retention issues.
- Develop and implement programs to train new employees, evaluate the husbandry skills of all employees, and promote the education of animal husbandry personnel.
- Ensure and supervise the care, comfort, nutrition, and safety provided to research animals.
- Supervise the receipt of incoming animals.
- Perform the duties of an animal care technician as needed.
- Coordinate activities with the Facilities Manager to ensure compliance with licensing and accrediting institutions, including USDA, FDA, NIH, and AAALAC International.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) or Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) obtained within one (1) year of start date.
- Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) obtained within two (2) years of start date.
- Five years of experience in all phases of animal care to include at least three years of experience as a supervisor in an animal facility or similar environment.
- Ability to understand and follow detailed scientific or medical instructions given by investigators and/or veterinarians.
- Computer literacy, good interpersonal skills to work and communicate with all levels of department and research personnel.
- Availability at unexpected times may be required, as the animal facility operates 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.
- Comfortable handling small animals in an academic research setting.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's of Science degree in biological sciences or related field of study.
- Experienced in compliance and regulatory oversight.
- Experience in animal work/animal projects.
Skills
- Ability to transport equipment, supplies and/or animals weighing up to 75 pounds using carts with casters.
- Capable of tolerating a significant amount of standing, bending and walking.
- May be required to work with biological, chemical and radiation hazards after proper training.
- Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.

Pay
Minimum Annual Salary: $52,270.00 Maximum Annual Salary: $79,727.50
