Description Overview of Department & Mentor

The department focuses on acute stroke treatment advancements through imaging, omics, and genetics. The goal is to develop blood biomarkers, MRI, and clinical outcomes databases for bioinformatics research.

Role Activities & Timeline

  • Literature review
  • Chart review and REDCap entry
  • Basics of manuscript writing
  • Data analysis
  • Basic stroke pathophysiology
  • Brain imaging and neuroanatomy

Role Summary & Objectives

Over the course of one year, interns will:

  • Learn the importance of human subject's protection, HIPAA, research compliance, and IRB review
  • Master chart review, record keeping, data entry, and manuscript writing
  • Gain foundational knowledge of stroke pathophysiology, brain imaging, and neuroanatomy
  • Develop presentation skills and project development abilities
  • Participate in career development mentorship including CV building, pre-med/pre-residency neurology preparation, and critical thinking for research project development

Qualifications Required

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Must reside in the greater Los Angeles area or surrounding cities
  • For academic credit, must receive academic credit for the duration of the internship
  • Visitors must be funded by an eligible sponsoring institution
