Responsibilities
- Assist in establishing, optimizing, and customizing histology procedures for fixing, processing, sectioning, staining, and reagent preparation to support immunohistochemistry projects.
- Perform routine immunohistochemistry on an automated platform and in situ hybridization, routine and special stains, and molecular studies.
- Absorb antibodies to be used for specific applications.
- Perform histology according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) and GLP (Good Laboratory Practices) regulations, as well as approved laboratory SOPs.
- Research, troubleshoot, and test new reagents.
- Perform routine data management including the organization and sharing of whole slide images.
- Optimize antigen retrieval conditions, blocking, detection, and titer to ensure ideal staining conditions for antibodies.
- Work independently as an immunohistochemistry and histology resource for researchers to assist with preparation of their protocols.
- Participate in group meetings with laboratory staff and researchers to discuss experimental design that will meet research goals.
- Accurately log-in, label, organize, track, store, and ship specimens according to approved laboratory SOPs.
- Maintain inventory and order supplies, as necessary.
- Prepare reagents from detailed laboratory procedures and document that quality control standards are being met.
- Aid in the design and writing of laboratory protocols for all procedures.
- Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment.
- Aid in the design and construction of tissue microarrays.
- Aid in organizing work and storage space and in general lab upkeep.
- Perform routine and specialized histology support as needed.
- Remain current in the field by completing at least 10 hours of continuing education a year.
Qualifications
- Research Histotechnician II: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Minimum 3 years of relevant Histology/Pathology experience. HT or HTL (ASCP) Certification plus one additional certification in immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology, or necropsy or demonstrate mastery of technique.
- Research Histotechnician III: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Minimum 5 years of relevant Histology/Pathology experience including 3 years in IHC. HT or HTL (ASCP) Certification plus one additional certification in immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology, or necropsy or demonstrate mastery of technique.
