Research Geneticist (Animal)
About the Role
This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Southeast Area (SEA), at the US National Poultry Research Center in Athens, GA. In this role, you will provide leadership and solutions for prevention and control of endemic poultry viruses using basic and applied approaches to benefit the poultry industry and consumers.
Responsibilities
- Conduct experimental research in animal genetics, poultry breeding, or related fields.
- Utilize computational software for data analysis in genetics research.
- Develop research on genetic resistance to poultry breeding and immune response in chickens.
- Plan and conduct research to determine the influence of vaccinations, genetic resistance, or deformations in chickens.
- Identify causation of genetic resistance, tumors, or deformations in poultry.
- Collaborate with internal or external stakeholders on research initiatives.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals related to animal genetics, poultry, or genomics.
Requirements
Basic Requirements for Genetics Series, 0440:
- Degree in genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics.
Additional Requirements:
GS-12 Level:- Specialized Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, including:
- Conducting experimental research in animal genetics.
- Utilizing computational software for data analysis.
- Publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals related to animals.
- OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in genetics, or a curriculum with major emphasis on genetics. Graduate study in related fields (e.g., agronomy, horticulture, animal/dairy/poultry husbandry, entomology, microbiology, plant pathology, chemistry, molecular and cellular biology, physiology) may qualify if it included sufficient emphasis on genetics.
- OR Combination: Successful combination of specialized experience and graduate-level education.
- Specialized Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service, including:
- Conducting experiments on the immune response in chickens.
- Developing research on genetic resistance in poultry breeding.
- Collaborating with internal or external stakeholders.
- Publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals related to poultry.
- Specialized Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service, including:
- Planning and conducting research on the influence of vaccinations in chickens and breeding.
- Identifying causation of deformations, genetic resistance, or tumors in chickens.
- Collaborating with internal or external stakeholders.
- Publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals related to chicken genomics.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).
