About the Role

The Magnet Science and Technology Division of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) is seeking an exceptional individual for a Research Faculty position focused on instrumentation and system analysis. The role involves developing systems—both hardware and software—to detect quench in superconducting magnets and safely discharge stored energy (up to 50 MJ) in a reliable and cost-effective manner. Additional responsibilities include designing high-performance power supply systems for large-scale superconducting magnets, integrating these with existing power systems, and developing control systems.

Key strategic targets include a 40 T all-superconducting magnet system and high-field HTS inserts up to 60 T. The position also involves securing external funding through competitive grants and industry partnerships, mentoring students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career staff, and leading the development of next-generation high-field magnet systems. Presenting at international conferences, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and preparing technical reports are expected. Some travel may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop hardware and software systems for quench detection and energy discharge in superconducting magnets (up to 50 MJ).
  • Design and integrate high-performance power supply systems for large-scale superconducting magnets.
  • Develop control systems for magnet operations.
  • Secure external funding through grants and industry partnerships.
  • Mentor students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career staff.
  • Lead the development of next-generation high-field magnet systems, including a 40 T all-superconducting magnet and high-field HTS inserts up to 60 T.
  • Present research at international conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Prepare technical reports and papers.
  • Travel as required for research and collaboration.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Applied Mathematics, or equivalent professional experience with a demonstrated record of research achievement.
  • Experience with LabVIEW and knowledge of low and high-temperature superconductors.
  • Expertise in electrical engineering, power system simulation, circuit design, and PCB design.
  • Background in magnet technology, superconductivity, and/or cryogenics.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Highly motivated and eager to work flexibly in a cross-disciplinary team environment.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and operating instrumentation systems, quench detection, and protection systems.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with physicists, engineers, designers, technicians, and other lab personnel.
