Research Engineer, Video Processing and Codec(Realtime Codec Optimizations)
About the role
The Realtime Codec Optimization Team at TikTok focuses on advancing video compression and processing technologies to enhance live-streaming products for millions of users. We seek talented researchers and developers who can contribute to shaping the future of video processing.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop commercial realtime video codecs for various formats
- Develop encoding and decoding frameworks and optimization algorithms for live-streaming applications
- Research and develop video encoding algorithms for different platforms
- Research and develop visual quality-oriented video coding and processing techniques
- Prepare encoder/decoder interface documentation
- Participate in the design and implementation of self-developed transmission protocols
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or above in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, statistics, or related fields
- Strong background in computer science fundamentals, including algorithms, data structures, and software design
- Good understanding of state-of-the-art compression algorithms
- Excellent programming, debugging, and optimization skills in C/C++, and familiarity with NEON/SIMD and multi-threading
- Experience in developing image/video-related applications, such as live streaming and video conferencing
- Familiarity with neural network-based image/video coding and processing
- Familiarity with video compression standards like AVS, H.264, H.265, VVC, and AV1
- Publishations in academic conferences or journals related to video coding standards
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in international standardization work
- Rich experience in video coding standards
- Collaborative mindset and strong written/verbal communication skills

Job Information
[For Pay Transparency] The base salary range for this position in the selected city is $148,200 - $300,960 annually. Compensation may vary based on qualifications, skills, and experience. Additional benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) plan with company matching, paid parental leave, short-term and long-term disability coverage, life insurance, and wellness benefits. Employees receive 10 paid holidays, 10 paid sick days, and 17 days of Paid Personal Time (prorated upon hire with increasing accruals by tenure).
