Research Engineer / Research Scientist, Health

About the Role

We’re looking for an exceptional, hands-on researcher to build frontier health capabilities and turn them into impact at scale. This role is for someone who can take an important, underdefined problem from 0→1: identify the right bet, build what’s needed to test it, and drive it to measurable improvements in models and products. We’re excited about researchers with technical depth in pretraining, reinforcement learning (RL) / post-training, or evaluations, as well as those with expertise in developing frontier biomedical AI capabilities. Prior healthcare experience is helpful but not required. Research excellence, velocity, ownership, and mission alignment are key. This role is based in San Francisco, CA, with a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. Relocation assistance is available.

Responsibilities

• Own a high-leverage research direction end-to-end: problem identification, measurement, experiment design, execution, and integration into frontier models.
• Develop scalable methods across pretraining, midtraining, RL, and post-training to improve health reasoning, knowledge, reliability, calibration, and behavior.
• Build and study RL environments grounded in real health problems, identifying robust, generalizable improvements.
• Create meaningful, trustworthy, and unsaturated evaluations to measure model improvements for patients and clinicians.
• Advance 0→1 capabilities in health that scale with model intelligence and test-time compute.
• Develop models and agents to work with longitudinal, multimodal health data for predictions, scientific insights, and decision support.
• Collaborate with researchers, engineers, clinicians, and product teams to integrate health capabilities into widely used models and products.
• Establish AI’s impact on real health outcomes, beyond impressive answers or demos.

Qualifications

• Strong track record in machine learning or AI research, with depth in pretraining, RL/post-training, evals, or frontier health/biomedical AI.
• Hands-on builder: experiment design, coding, data and infrastructure work, and rapid idea-to-evidence execution.
• Strong research taste to identify important problems and promising approaches.
• End-to-end ownership of ambiguous problems, with willingness to learn new skills.
• Goal-oriented focus, embracing unglamorous work for high-leverage impact.
• Focus on scalability, generalization, and real-world deployment of capabilities.
• Collaborative mindset, working with low-ego, ambitious teams across disciplines.
• Bonus: Experience with health AI, longitudinal health data, or clinical research.
