Research Associate

Department Overview: The Oregon National Primate Center (ONPRC) is located 12 miles west of the OHSU main campus on 162 acres featuring forested areas, research and administration buildings, indoor and outdoor animal housing, and a 2-mile perimeter walking path. Our mission is to improve human health and quality of life through nonhuman primate research programs that advance knowledge of the causes, preventions, treatments, and cures of debilitating diseases.

About the Role

The Viral Immunology Core (VIC) at the Oregon National Primate Research Center is seeking a flow cytometry technician to join a small team operating the VIC’s flow cytometers and assisting users with troubleshooting. The VIC houses two BD FACS Symphonies, one Cytek Northern Lights, and one BD Fusion cell sorter.

Responsibilities

• Perform general maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and simple repair of flow cytometers (QA/QC).
• Conduct quality control of data before and during acquisition.
• Collaborate with users to design flow cytometry panels for individualized research needs.
• Coordinate repairs of flow cytometers, either internally or with manufacturers.
• Manage reagent ordering and billing.
• Run samples for users on flow cytometers.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Master’s Degree in a relevant field and 3 years of relevant experience; or Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field and 5 years of relevant experience.
• Comfortable using computers (Mac, PC).
• Willingness to work with pathogens potentially dangerous to humans.
• Willingness to work in Biosafety Level 2, 2+, and 3 facilities.
• Ability to work flexible hours, possibly including nights and weekends.
• Ability to carry and lift 35–50 lbs.
• Ability to stand for 5–8 hours per day.
• Ability to work 4–6 hours using a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) and/or N95 respirator.
• Ability to work on a computer up to 8 hours per day.
• Ability to perform essential functions with or without accommodation.
• Compliance with vaccination requirements (Hepatitis B, Measles, Tetanus) and TB screening every 6–12 months.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of flow cytometry and experience in a biohazard laboratory.
• Past laboratory experience.
• Experience designing flow cytometry antibody panels.
