About the Role
The Millay Lab at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center seeks a highly motivated Research Assistant III/IV to contribute to innovative research in molecular cardiovascular biology. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Doug Millay, assisting with experiments, data analysis, and laboratory operations to advance our understanding of cardiovascular disease mechanisms.
Responsibilities
- Design, perform, and optimize molecular and cellular biology experiments, including but not limited to: PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, cell culture, and CRISPR-based gene editing.
- Generate and maintain genetically modified mouse models for cardiovascular research.
- Conduct histological and imaging analyses of tissue samples (e.g., heart, skeletal muscle) using techniques such as confocal microscopy and RNAscope.
- Process and analyze large datasets, including RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, and proteomics data, using bioinformatics tools (e.g., R, Python, or relevant software).
- Document experimental procedures, results, and protocols in laboratory notebooks and databases.
- Prepare reagents, solutions, and media for laboratory use; maintain laboratory equipment and inventory.
- Assist in the preparation of manuscripts, grant applications, and presentations for scientific meetings.
- Train and supervise junior lab members, including students and new research assistants.
- Ensure compliance with institutional biosafety, animal care, and laboratory safety protocols.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred for Research Assistant IV.
- For Research Assistant III: Minimum of 2 years of relevant laboratory experience (e.g., academic, industry, or clinical research).
- For Research Assistant IV: Minimum of 4 years of relevant laboratory experience, including demonstrated proficiency in advanced techniques (e.g., CRISPR, mouse genetics, or bioinformatics).
- Hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques (e.g., cloning, qPCR, Western blot, cell culture).
- Experience with histological techniques (e.g., tissue sectioning, staining, microscopy) is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with animal models (e.g., mouse handling, breeding, genotyping) and IACUC protocols.
- Basic bioinformatics skills (e.g., data analysis in R/Python, sequence alignment) are a plus.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for documenting results and presenting findings.
Skills
- Proficiency in molecular and cellular biology techniques (e.g., DNA/RNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, transfection).
- Experience with microscopy (e.g., confocal, fluorescence) and image analysis software (e.g., ImageJ, Fiji).
- Ability to troubleshoot experimental protocols and adapt to new methodologies.
- Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and electronic lab notebooks (ELN).
