About the role

Performs moderately complex (journey-level) research work. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Work involves examining, preparing, and evaluating legal documents, conducting legal research, and providing assistance to agency attorneys.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with hearing preparation and drafting legal documents for hearings, summary judgment, and other briefing materials (40%).
  • Drafts discovery, expert designations, and other legal documents and pleadings as needed.
  • Reads and assesses legal cases, writes case summaries, creates case timelines, and manages case evidence (35%).
  • Conducts comprehensive legal research to support the legal staff and collects, compiles, and analyzes research data (20%).
  • May draft memoranda on regulatory matters or administrative rules.
  • Researches and analyzes legal issues and interprets laws, regulations, and rulings.
  • Ensures all legal research and documents are accurate, thorough, and well-written.
  • Ensures security and confidentiality of sensitive and protected information.
  • Collaborates with the legal staff to develop strategies and provide support across various areas in the Office of General Counsel.
  • Performs related work as assigned (5%).

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree. Transcripts must be presented at the time of interview.
  • Experience conducting legal research and knowledge of Westlaw research tools.
  • Experience in research and working with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code.
  • Possess a valid Texas driver license, or able to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be able to present a copy of law school transcripts at interview.

Knowledge

  • Legal practices and terminology.
  • Spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and grammar.

Skills

  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of a computer and Microsoft 365 programs.
  • Ability to prepare legal documents.

Physical Requirements

  • Functions in a standard office environment.
  • Able to move around the office to access filing cabinets, office equipment, and move up to 20 pounds.
  • Able to communicate and exchange information via phone, computer, in person, and via electronic media.
  • Able to perform repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
  • Able to work with overlapping deadlines.

This position is expected to work in the office but may be eligible for situational or hybrid telework schedule upon completion of an initial probationary period. For teleworking, must have a secure, dedicated workspace with internet service, ability to maintain a reliable consistent work schedule, and be available for meetings and group collaboration via Microsoft Teams or other platforms/applications during regular business hours.
