Research Assistant I (Biology)
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is seeking a highly motivated individual for a temporary, part-time, non-exempt Research Assistant I position in the Biology Department. This role is available for up to ten months from the date of hire, renewable based on performance and funding availability, and is eligible for benefits.
About the role
The Research Assistant will assist with DNA extractions and related molecular biology techniques used in environmental DNA analyses, working with lab personnel to process and analyze field-collected DNA and animal samples.
Responsibilities
- With supervision, assist with and carry out molecular protocols, including DNA extractions, DNA quantification, PCR, and gel electrophoresis
- Report and organize data collected
- Participate in fieldwork, including potentially research cruises
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (transcripts may be requested)
- Excellent academic and professional references
- Prior experience with environmental DNA protocols preferred
- Willingness to learn and actively participate in an interdisciplinary team
- Attention to detail and careful work habits
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Effective communication skills
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift less than 25 lb per day and carry up to 10 lb per day
- Reaching above and below the shoulders, stooping/kneeling, and climbing ladders/stools
- Use of hands for basic grasping/manipulation and fine manipulation (e.g., pipetting, which may include repetitive motions)
- Visual abilities: depth perception, ability to adjust focus, and distinguish basic colors
- Near vision, ability to hear, respond, talk, and travel
- Ability to work with and around others in a lab setting as well as alone
- Potential exposure to hazardous substances or specimens
Pay
Salary range: $22.08/hour – $28.33/hour. Actual compensation will be determined based on relevant skills, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and market conditions.
